Hypervigilance in the body, whether from chronic pain or previous injury or our beliefs about our health can break our faith in our body and its capabilities. Mobility is the pathway back to body faith and freedom of movement. Basically it’s reconnecting with all of the things we took for granted when we were younger. Strength, stamina, balance and coordination. That’s our work IN today we’re looking at using mobility to stage our own personal body faith revival.
Anyone who has experienced chronic pain ever in their life, which is statistically 8o% of the population, will tell you that even long after the pain has subsided or even gone away, there is still this sense of hypervigilance every time a new sensation comes up, painful or otherwise. It’s that hypervigilance in the nervous system, that feeling of being on constant high alert, that breaks the innate trust in our mind body connection.

When it hurts to move something has to change...

The truth is pain is normal and we all get to experience it from time to time. There are too many sources to enumerate here and that’s really beyond the scope of this podcast. What we’re really interested in is how to make it go away, right? No one wants to live in chronic pain. One of the reasons for that is that it makes us not want to move. But not moving for too long when something hurts (outside of injury) can shorten range of motion, affect stability, mobility and flexibility and increase the risk of falls. As well as limiting our activities of daily living.

Racing thoughts, rumination, wired and tired. All of these are top complaints about sleep disturbances. Have you been there? Physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted and yet incapable of shutting down the racing thoughts in order to get to sleep. It’s not your fault but it is within your control. And that’s our Work IN today. We’re going to explore top down and bottom up tools to win the race to sleep and master the art of recovery.

Sleep is the ultimate tool for recovery. Built into every single day, sleep is when every system in the body repairs and resets itself for the next day. But it is nearly impossible to get to sleep by simply telling yourself to go to sleep. In fact in many cases that thought alone is guaranteed to keep you awake.

What if the way our body and mind is responding to our day is exactly right and makes complete sense? What if instead of fighting it we made a subtle shift to work with the body. Instead of stressing ourselves out about getting to sleep we focused on mastering recovery.

We can use ANY kind of exercise to lower our stress reactions in the real world. It doesn't matter what the intensity of that exercise is. What matters is that we are paying attention to that discomfort (not dissociating from it), that we are present and noticing, feeling, and making choices. Those 3 things are key to turning exercise for physical fitness into exercise for mental resilience.

Notice Feel Choose

Let’s break those down.

Today on The Work IN podcast.

It’s so tempting to try to change everything all at once. Tempting and unnecessary. And for some people it ends up being an exercise in frustration and failure. When it comes to getting healthy for the long haul what we really want is lifestyle renovation. Just like in any good renovation project the starting place is often with the cleanup. That’s our Work IN today. How do we support the changes we want and clear our path to health and fitness results?

We're looking at 3 areas where we can get in our own way and how setting some guardrails in any of our health pillars can get and keep us on track.

Check out this weeks The Work IN podcast Titrating healthy lifestyle: Using guardrails to get out of our own way.
