One of the most overlooked performance variables in poultry systems is feeder height.

When feeders are set too low, bird behaviour shifts almost immediately. Birds begin to sit around the feeder rather than move through it. That increased contact leads to more scratching, more physical interaction, and ultimately a higher risk of skin damage.

At that point, the issue is already moving beyond the house.

What starts as a simple setup misalignment carries through to processing — showing up as carcass damage, downgrades, and in some cases, condemnations. The cost isn’t always obvious in real time, but it accumulates quietly across the system.

This is where the gap between formulation and outcome becomes clear.

You can have a well-structured nutritional program, but if the delivery environment is not aligned, performance will not follow as expected. Feeder height, in this context, is not a management detail — it is part of the functional system that determines how effectively that nutrition is utilised.
