Do you want to know what a diagnostic medical sonographer really does?

And no, it’s not just scanning babies.

Borrowed from a fellow sonographer:

October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month and I’d like for you to take the time to read this.

Worldwide, doctors and nurses receive all the credit while medical imaging takes a back seat with the general public and hospital administrators. (No discredit, we’re all in this for the same reasons) We are not button pushers. We are not “just techs”. We are part of your diagnosis/prognosis and treatment. Sonography specifically, is 100% user dependent. The probes on the machine are guided only by our hands. We take the pictures. If we find something wrong, we have to know how to image that finding and how it fits into the puzzle that is the human body so that we know where to look next.

Far too often I have heard the words “honey, she just takes the pictures, she doesn’t know what she’s looking at.” I know EXACTLY what I am looking at.

I knew that mass I found 3 weeks ago on a patient was breast cancer before the pathology report even came back. I knew it while I was scanning it. I knew it before the radiologist, pathologist or even the patient.

I know that all those gallbladder stones I just found are what’s causing your pain and that you’ll be headed to surgery within the next few weeks to get it surgically removed.

I knew that baby didn’t have a heartbeat the second I put the probe down.

I knew that pancreatic mass I found was a death sentence for that patient.

Sonography is steadily overlooked in terms of job related injuries. But I bet you didn’t know that sonographers have a 90% risk of muskuloskeletal disorders. NINETY PERCENT. I have been scanning for 5 years and I scan in pain. My wrist will give out, my elbow aches and I have had a muscle spasm in my shoulder for 2 years. Not only are we actively scanning in pain, but we push that 300 pound machine all around the hospital day and night, we are moving patients, beds, etc., we are bent every which way and standing awkwardly to be able to get the best images. We are called in multiple times a night after working a full shift, and are expected to show up on time the next day.

Who in their right mind would sign up for this? Me. My amazing coworkers. And the approximately 50,300 other sonographers (in the US). We do this because we think ultrasound is fascinating. We do this because we enjoy being a part of patient care. We make a difference.

Thank your sonographers. Odds are that person is exhausted and feeling burnt out. Possibly wondering if they made the right career choice. Take a second to tell them they made a difference for you or a family member. I promise it makes all the difference, and pulls us right back to the reality of the importance of our work.

Today we say a special prayer for all the loved ones who have a baby they never got to meet. A baby they never got to hold. A baby who was born sleeping. A baby they never got to bring home. A baby they never got to raise.
