Wishing all of our Pediatric Associates of Springfield families a wonderful, safe, and happy Memorial Day weekend! As we kick off the summer season, our team wants to help you keep your little ones healthy and protected. Here are our top warm-weather safety reminders:

☀️ Sun — Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen before heading outside and reapply every two hours.
💧 Heat & Hydration — Keep kids cool, offer plenty of water, and watch closely for signs of heat exhaustion.
🏊 Water — Always assign an adult "water watcher" and never leave children unattended near pools, lakes, or rivers.
🌿 Outdoors — Learn to spot poison ivy before your hikes and double-check playground equipment temperature before play.
🐛 Bites & Stings — Make tick checks a routine part of coming inside and use kid-safe insect repellent.
🎆 Fireworks — Keep little hands safe by leaving fireworks to the professionals—remember, even sparklers can cause serious burns.

Is mealtime starting to feel like a battlefield?

Picky eating is a normal developmental phase. In fact, up to 20% of 3-year-olds are picky eaters! Here is how to keep the peace at the dinner table:

🍎 Fruit counts as a veggie
There are no "essential" foods, only essential food groups. If your child refuses bitter greens, encourage more fruit instead! They provide similar nutrients and keep kids happy.

🚫 Respect the "No"
If a food makes your child gag or vomit, stop serving it. Forcing the issue only creates a negative association with eating.

👅 The "Rule of 10"
New tastes are acquired. A child may need to try a food 10 times before they like it. Be patient and keep the pressure low.

🍪 Don't fight over dessert
Avoid using sweets as a bribe. Offer one serving of dessert regardless of how much "real food" they ate to remove the friction.

✨ The Bottom Line
Most kids grow out of this! Focus on keeping mealtimes pleasant. If you’re worried about gaps in nutrition, a multivitamin once or twice a week is a perfect safety net.

If you have questions about your child's nutrition, please don't hesitate to give us a call!

According to the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, 75 percent of bike-related fatalities would be prevented with a helmet. Helmet use can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent and severe brain injury by 88 percent.

Follow these tips to stay safe while riding a bike!

🚲 Wear a properly fitted helmet. It is the best way to prevent head injuries and death. Use the "eyes, ears, and chin" method to ensure a correct fit.

🚲 Ride on the sidewalk when you can. If not, ride in the same direction as traffic as far on the right-hand side as possible.

🚲 Know and use hand signals. Be predictable by making sure you ride in a straight line and don't swerve between cars.

🚲 Wear bright colors and use lights, especially when riding at night and in the morning. Reflectors on your clothes and bike will help you be seen.

🚲 Ride together as a family until all members are comfortable and confident riders!
