Tips for Success Using Gaffney Joints:
* Place the hinge at the distal end and ensure it moves freely—binding usually means not enough plastic was removed.
* Trim the proximal end at a 45° angle (center to pin) to allow proper dorsiflexion and prevent binding.
* Mark medial and lateral sides before removing hinges to maintain correct alignment during assembly.
* For heavier or more active patients, use two bumpers (included in select kits).
* Gaffney hinges are also suitable for wrist and elbow braces.
