Today, the Church honors the Feast of St. John Paul II.

A true shepherd of the Church, he called the world to holiness with his famous words: “Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors to Christ.”

St. John Paul II showed us the path of courage rooted in prayer, fidelity to the Eucharist, and deep love for Our Lady. He reminded us that authentic freedom is found in surrender to Christ and that every human life—no matter how small or fragile—is a gift of God’s love.

🙏 Prayer for Reflection
St. John Paul II, pray for us.
Teach us to be steadfast in faith,
to defend the sanctity of life and family,
and to entrust ourselves always to Jesus through Mary.
May we, like you, be fearless witnesses of Christ’s mercy. ✝️

📖 The middle of October is a good time to pause and remember the guiding power of God’s Word in our lives.

Scripture is not just a book of the past—it is alive, speaking into every season of our journey. In moments of doubt, it gives us clarity. In seasons of sorrow, it brings comfort. And in times of joy, it reminds us of the Source of every blessing.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105

At Calvary Cemetery, we walk these sacred grounds with faith, hope, and love, trusting that Christ—the Living Word—continues to light the path before us. His Word assures us that even in the valley of grief, we are never alone, and that every step taken in faith draws us closer to the promise of eternal life.

May we always turn to God’s Word as our compass, our comfort, and our light, allowing it to shape our hearts and guide us home to Him. ✝️

✨ Today we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

The Rosary is more than a prayer—it is a journey of love that draws us closer to Christ through the heart of His Mother. Each bead is like a step with Mary, leading us into the mysteries of Jesus’ life, His suffering, and His triumph over death.

🙏 Prayer for Reflection
Mary, Queen of the Rosary, intercede for us.
Cover us with your mantle of peace,
and guide our hearts always to your Son, Jesus.

May the Rosary be our weapon of faith, our refuge of hope, and our chain of love that unites us with Heaven. ✝️

and to trust in His love each day. ✝️

On this day, the Church honors the three archangels named in Scripture:

St. Michael is described in the Book of Revelation as the leader of the heavenly hosts who defends God’s people against evil.

St. Gabriel appears in Scripture as God’s messenger, announcing to Mary that she would bear Jesus.

St. Raphael is known from the Book of Tobit as the angel who guides Tobias on his journey and brings healing to his family.

The Church celebrates them together on September 29, a feast known as Michaelmas, reminding us of the many ways God sends His angels to protect, guide, and heal His people.

Please note: the photos shared today are not from Calvary but were taken at the Holy Angels Columbaria at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Montgomery, Ohio. Calvary Cemetery will be receiving a new columbaria similar to this one at the gazebo.

Born Francesco Forgione in a small Italian village, Padre Pio became a Capuchin friar known worldwide for his prayer, humility, and deep love of Christ. In 1918, after celebrating Mass, he received the stigmata—the visible wounds of Christ—making him a living witness to the mystery of the Cross.

For more than 50 years, he quietly heard confessions, celebrated Mass, offered spiritual direction, and welcomed pilgrims seeking peace. In 1956, he founded the “House for the Relief of Suffering,” a hospital that still serves thousands today.

Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968, and was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. His feast day reminds us that even in suffering, faith and love can become powerful sources of healing and hope.

At Calvary Cemetery, we join the Church in celebrating the Feast of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, remembering his devotion to prayer, charity, and compassion.

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Matthew, the apostle and evangelist who left behind his life as a tax collector to follow Christ. Through his Gospel, Matthew shared with us the Beatitudes — words of comfort, challenge, and hope that still guide us today:

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land…
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.” (Matthew 5)

On this feast day, we reflect on St. Matthew’s witness and the call to live by Christ’s words.

The day after the Church celebrates the Cross of Christ, we turn to His Mother, who never left His side.

The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows began centuries ago with the Servite Order, who reflected deeply on the “Seven Sorrows of Mary.” These are seven moments when her heart was pierced with grief: Simeon’s prophecy in the temple, the flight into Egypt, losing the Child Jesus, meeting Him on the road to Calvary, standing beneath the Cross, receiving His body, and placing Him in the tomb.

In 1814, Pope Pius VII extended this feast to the entire Church, and in 1913, Pope Pius X fixed the date to September 15th, right after the Exaltation of the Cross. This timing places Mary’s faithful love directly beside the mystery of Christ’s sacrifice.

Her feast reminds us that even in sorrow, God can bring forth courage, hope, and redemption.

At Calvary Cemetery, we join the Church in honoring the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, remembering Mary’s faithful witness and her courage at the Cross.

A journey began nearly 1,700 years ago when St. Helena discovered the True Cross during her pilgrimage to Jerusalem. In 335, the newly built Church of the Holy Sepulchre was dedicated—and the next day, the Cross was held high for the faithful to venerate. Through that act, the Cross was transformed from a symbol of suffering into a symbol of redemption.

Later, in 629, Emperor Heraclius returned the Cross to Jerusalem after many years in exile.**

This feast reminds us that God can turn even the most painful instrument into a sign of victory and hope.

Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, is credited with having found the cross on which Jesus was crucified. The Exaltation of the Holy Cross quickly became an object of veneration.
