Do you barefoot trim horses, too? That's a question I get asked often, and the answer is YES. Over half of the horses I care for are barefoot. My thought process anytime I pick up a horses foot is less is more. I only take what is necessary for the horse to do its job and the foot to function as it should. Whether it be shod, barefoot, padded, or a funky therapeutic package. Knowing what to leave is as important as knowing what to take. Before a sharp tool touches the foot, I've evaluated turnout conditions and weather conditions and have talked to the client about the horses job and what terrain they are riding in. A horse that works in a sand arena might be trimmed and shod differently than one that's going elk hunting in the mountains or doing 20 miles a weekend on trails. Knowing the anatomy, conformation, and how the foot functions is paramount to providing the best possible hoofcare for each individual animal.

Sometimes what works for one horse won't work for another with identical pathologies. This horse has had quite a few different therapeutic packages put on him to try to keep him sound. He has some navicular changes, and we had taken him barefoot for nearly a year, and he was doing really well until recently. After coffin joint injections, he was still presenting grade 3 to 4 lameness. Today's shoeing package is hopefully the one he'll like. It is a wedged aluminum egg bar with a rocker bar forged in. This setup allows elevation of the heels without the constant ground force concussion. We added a leather pad as well to help add additional shock-absorbing properties and some solar protection, as he is thinner soled as well.

When the vets horse needs a little something extra. Horse presented with bilateral lameness on the forelimbs. Significant fluid in the coffin joints and the left front sensitive to frog pressure with hoof testers with suspected inflammation of the navicular bursa. Optod for a hard plastic wedge pads and a PLR shoe package to raise the hoof angle and try to alleviate strain on the deep digital flexor tendon. Horse has shown significant improvement and appears more comfortable.

Farriers like new toys too. Pulling toe clips on this barrel horse with a new hammer. A common question i get is what is the purpose of clips? In this horses case, he is a large powerful horse that comes into the dirt so hard he will shove his shoes back 1/4 of an inch. The toe clip helps to take the shear force off of the nails and helps prevents shoe from shifting.

At Trinity Veterinary Medical Center today, we glued on Hanton Horseshoes to a 26-year-old mare with thin hoof walls and minimal sole depth. The Hanton system of glue-on horseshoes incorporates metal tabs that can be attached to any steel horseshoe, which is then glued onto the hoof wall. Glue-on options are excellent for horses that require protection of the hoof capsule but are sensitive to nailing. Thanks to Dr. Amanda Lawson DVM the attending veterinarian and Nathan Howell CF for stopping by to help; although glue-ons can be done solo, an extra set of hands makes arts and crafts easier.
