I'm a huge fan of the KISS method in my everyday work. Solid basic fundamentals are the foundation for a strong healthy hoof capsule. New horse on the books stood great. Factory keg shoes fit up well on a balanced trim with some road pins in to keep him from ice skating at the stockyards.

Did you know that alot of us farriers practice shoeing horses on our days off. An educated farrier that is knowledgeable about anatomy, shoe building, and functions of therapeutic applications is an essential part of your horses health and well being. Every year I put in several hundred hours of continuing education between clinics, competition, practice, and riding along with other farriers. Today was practicing some fundamental basics on a pasture pony we take care of. Handmade no power or rasping the shoes to work on fit, measurements, and forging.

Rolled up to 1st stop this morning for some trims, but new horse needed more than just a trim. Made a heartbar for one foot and a straightbar for the other foot. The horse Had several old abscess tracts that needed resection,and By the time all the disconnected wall was removed, it had very little to nail into on the lateral side. Opted to put a glue patch and then cast around the shoe. With regular care, we should be able to grow out healthy hoof capsule within 6 to 9 months.

Making shoes for horses specific job is a large part of a farriers trade. One horse factory shoes weren't punched appropriately to safely nail on the horse. The other is a barel horse that needed more width and traction than the factory shoes I had available. Custom built to the horses specific feet.

Had a great time at our annual Texas Professional Farriers Association annual contest in Denton this weekend. Got the opportunity to work on a draft team with a couple of buddies of mine that have helped me out a ton on working together as a team to shoe the big boys. We are extremely blessed to have a great group of professional farriers here in Texas that genuinely want to better our trade.

Made some half round barshoes for a horse today with low articular ringbone. Used a concave section of steel and folded it closed to create the half round section. The omnidirectional quality will allow horse to move off of whatever pivot point that is most comfortable. The barshoe aspect will help distribute load across caudal aspect of the foot and provide some hoof capsule stability. Overall horse seems as comfortable as he can be in this setup.
