Hi everyone! Jack continues to get stronger and his labs are heading in the right direction. He is still in St. Louis but will be heading back to Quincy on Wednesday of this week. We have set up a meal train for him to help with his care. Feel free to message Ali Manahan with any questions!

Please keep these in mind when cooking:
- all meat needs to be cooked to medium well to well done
- eggs need to be cooked
- cheeses must be pasteurized
- rinse fruits and vegetables
- avoid raw sprouts (alfalfa or bean sprouts). Cooked sprouts are okay.
- NO grapefruit, pomegranate and star fruit as they can interfere with transplant medication.

Jack is getting stronger every day. He’s still doing dialysis as the kidney hasn’t ”woken up” yet but this is common with deceased kidneys. Found out today that he can’t hunt/fish for a year and his response was “well that’s going to be a problem!” 😂 He has to be very careful around ticks and animals due to parasites. He doesn’t have many dietary restrictions anymore but can’t eat at buffets or eat food that’s been out for longer than an hour. When he goes home to Quincy I (Ali, his daughter) plan on setting up a meal train for him but will keep everyone updated on that. He’s hopefully coming home to my house in O’Fallon today or tomorrow but we don’t know for sure yet. He’s getting a port put in sometime today to make lab draws easier.

Feel free to message/call him. He’s doing great!

Just talked to the doc. He's done. Everything went great! Kidney is still "waking up" but they said that's normal. It will be a couple hours before we get to see Jack Freiburg

Great news! Keep the prayers coming!

COVID-19 is having a devastating affect on the kidneys, and will leave us with an even larger kidney patient population than before. Permanent kidney damage may be the secret, debilitating legacy of this virus and demands public policy that will help to alleviate suffering.

Despite research showing that early detection and intervention can slow or stop the progression of chronic kidney disease, the federal government spends almost nothing on kidney health initiatives. At the same time, Medicare spends more than $120 billion annually — 24% of its budget — on patients with kidney failure; our budget is allocated to address only the end, when it’s clear that money should also be spent on awareness and prevention. We’re working to change that, but we can’t do it alone.

The lives of many COVID-19 survivors will be forever changed by kidney disease, but you have the power to speak up on their behalf – to provide help where it’s so desperately needed. Give help today: https://bit.ly/2WpXKpI

Jack’s Kidney Story

My name is Jack Freiburg and I am in need of a kidney transplant.

My Chronic Kidney Disease was first diagnosed over ten years ago. My decreased kidney function showed up in a routine blood test. After a biopsy, it was determined that I had membranous glomerulonephritis. (What a mouthful!) It is a slowly progressive autoimmune disease of the kidneys that affects mainly people 30 to 50. My favorite 66th birthday present was very memorable. Dialysis!

I have now been on hemodialysis for six months. I didn’t think I was going to have to ask the general public for this biggest of all donations, a kidney. My sister, Julie, was a perfect match for me. After undergoing all of the testing, it was determined that she should keep both of her kidneys. Needless to say, that was a major disappointment.

Overall, I am doing fine. I work out 3-4 times a week, attend all kind of events, and still do volunteering for various civic groups. I still work part time. I have to go to the DaVita dialysis clinic three times a week for roughly four hour sessions. Travel takes some planning, but is doable. I just requalified for the transplant list at Barnes Hospital.
