Remember that "cold" foods and drinks don't actually cool you off. As tempting as it feels to reach into the fridge or freezer on a hot day for a treat, you're actually compromising your digestion when you flood it with cold.
Think of your digestion as a small fire in your stomach. The warmth is what helps to transform and transport the nutrients from your food and drink to where it needs to go. When we flood it with ice, we hurt the Spleen and Stomach's ability to do their jobs. This can cause fatigue, loose stools, and a build up of dampness (sticky fluids).
When you reach for energetically cooling foods, like watermelon, mint, cucumber, or coconut water, you're actually cooling the body by hydrating it on a cellular level and increasing urination so you can expel Heat from the body more quickly. All of this and no damage to your precious digestion!
DON'T FORGET TO EAT THE WHITE OF THE RIND!
This is the MOST hydrating part of the watermelon and works better than any electrolyte pack ever could (without the added sugar or "natural" flavors). This part is great for sun stroke, fever, and even sunburn discomfort.
Happy Summer, acu-pals!
