Remember that "cold" foods and drinks don't actually cool you off. As tempting as it feels to reach into the fridge or freezer on a hot day for a treat, you're actually compromising your digestion when you flood it with cold.

Think of your digestion as a small fire in your stomach. The warmth is what helps to transform and transport the nutrients from your food and drink to where it needs to go. When we flood it with ice, we hurt the Spleen and Stomach's ability to do their jobs. This can cause fatigue, loose stools, and a build up of dampness (sticky fluids).

When you reach for energetically cooling foods, like watermelon, mint, cucumber, or coconut water, you're actually cooling the body by hydrating it on a cellular level and increasing urination so you can expel Heat from the body more quickly. All of this and no damage to your precious digestion!

DON'T FORGET TO EAT THE WHITE OF THE RIND!
This is the MOST hydrating part of the watermelon and works better than any electrolyte pack ever could (without the added sugar or "natural" flavors). This part is great for sun stroke, fever, and even sunburn discomfort.

Happy Summer, acu-pals!

We officially moved into Heart Time on the Summer Solstice last Friday!

That day is considered the most Yang time of year, when we have the longest amount of light and the most energy.

What is also so unique about this time of year is that, all imbalances that we experience in Winter (Yin Time), can be corrected and treated during Summer (Yang Time). Cold and cold-related patterns and pathogens can be expelled from the body during this time of year when the warmth is abundant. And as you well know by now, Chinese medicine is all about WARMTH! No cold ANYTHING for your body as it puts out your internal fire.

Now that Yang energy is at its peak, what are you feeling? Are you experiencing the fiery symptoms of insomnia, red and puffy face, manic behavior, and skin issues? Or are you a Fire person? LOVING the warmth, tapped into the abundant energy of this time of year, experiencing joy and mental clarity?!

A few ways to calm the Fire:
--> GO TO BED. Just go to bed. It's so easy to blow past your normal bed time because it's staying so light for so long. But we still need to be asleep during Gallbladder and Liver time to reap the benefits of their strong detox functions. So, in bed and asleep by 11pm!

--> Avoid overly spicy or fiery foods - we don't want to aggravate that heat in our bodies with more heat. Opt for energetically cooling foods like watermelon, mint, cucumber, coconut water, and limes.

--> Try not to overwork if it's possible! It's such a common time to go on vacation during the Summer, so LEAN into it!

--> Express your emotions with empathy and care. Stuffing our feelings down generates more Heat than we need. Let it out and let it go!

--> Avoid people who stress you out and dysregulate your nervous system. We simply do not have time for that anymore!

--> Most importantly, get acupuncture! Balance out that Fire so you can enjoy all that Summer has to offer!

Not overly activated. But not numb.

Not super enraged. But not apathetic.

Not crying all the time. But not forced joy.

Your autonomic nervous system is made up of your sympathetic response (fight/flight/freeze/fawn/fix) & your parasympathetic response (rest/digest/restore).

Balancing these two systems is where true regulation happens.

Luckily, acupuncture has you covered; body, mind, and spirit.

Ice ice baby (too cold, too cold)…

TCM practitioners LOVE to talk about WARM everything…so let’s STOP, collaborate, and LISTEN:

🧦Our Kidney, Liver, and Spleen channels all start on the feet and run up our inner legs into our lower abdomens. These channels are the most important channels for keeping optimal reproductive health.

🧦The Kidneys, and specifically Kidney Yang, is like our body’s engine and house the foundation of all our energy throughout the body: think metabolism, bone protection, proper hearing, healthy hair, and reproductive health.

🧦If you are a woman, you need to keep your feet warm!

🧦If you are a woman trying to conceive, you DEFINITELY need to keep your feet warm!

🧦If you are a person struggling with hearing issues, hair loss, edema, digestive sluggishness, or even struggling with loss of motivation, you need to keep your feet warm!

🧦Wear socks, have a foot soak, don’t go to bed with cold feet, get acupuncture, do moxa, and don’t walk around barefoot in your house on cold floors (but DEFINITELY walk around barefoot outside in the grass!).

🧦DANCE! Dancing activates all of those lower leg channels and boosts your Qi. So shake what your Mama gave you and yo, VIP….let’s KICK IT!

Your commitment up front is KEY!

We are working together to remind your body how to heal itself. It definitely knows how...it just...forgets.

We get stuck in habits, thought patterns, relationships, and attachments that just won't let go sometimes. Think of them like hamsters on a wheel. Just spinning and spinning and spinning with no end in sight.

Acupuncture offers an off ramp. If you keep taking that off ramp, new neural pathways can be carved and your habits will change! (Our brains are so cool!)

This only happens with dedication and consistency UP FRONT. I'll always recommend that you come weekly for 6-8 treatments for this reason. See that 4th treatment? When it hits, it hits hard and you'll feel yourself making gains, even if you feel a little backslide afterwards. You'll notice that, even with a little backslide, your symptoms are less intense and your ability to deal with them has increased.

I frequently hear my patients say, "XYZ happened over the weekend and I realized that I didn't freak out about it. Even my husband/partner/sister/Mom/best friend noticed that I was unusually calm about it."

We are building resiliency against stressors and we're also banking treatments into your own, private, little reservoir. So when stressors do arise, you have resources to use to regulate instead of trying to pour from an empty cup.

WHAT. A. GIFT.

Stick with it. Healing is never linear. If you can modify your expectations for yourself, you'll see that, even when you're feeling crummy or activated, you're actually dealing with it better than you normally would. And that's progress.

COLD IN THE UTERUS: COLD WOMB

This is the most common reason for fertility challenges in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

If you've been a fertility patient of mine or you are someone who menstruates, I've likely felt your lower abdomen (and had you feel it, too!) to notice if you feel cold to the touch in this area.

Cold in the uterus produces symptoms like:
- clotted cycles with dark, dark blood
- painful cramping in your low abdomen or low back
- fibroids, polyps, cysts, or endo growths in (or around) the uterus
- miscarriage

With Cold contracting in the uterus, there is not enough healthy blood flow to and from your uterus producing something the Chinese call, "Blood Stasis," or "Blood Stagnation." The stagnant, unmoving blood is what causes the clotting of your menstrual blood as well as the debilitating pain.

Some tips:
1. Try to limit or completely avoid cold food and drink. Drink room temp water (no ice!); add a warm component to your salads to bring them up in temperature, like grilled chicken or salmon; limit your smoothie intake, especially the week before and during your cycle when blood needs to be warm and moving.

2. Wear socks and cover your low abdomen and lower back at all times! Our reproductive channels/meridians start on our feet and ankles and energetically encircle or enter our reproductive organs. Keep your body warm! A warm body produces a warm womb.

3. Dry your hair before leaving the house. This is especially important in the winter months, but you can practice this year round. Wet hair leaves you more susceptible to Wind and Cold invasion.

4. Get regular acupuncture and take your herbs! Perhaps this should be first! You can see me applying moxibustion (moxa) to the low abdomen in this photo. Moxa (mugwort) is warming. It's pure Yang energy centered directly over your uterus and low abdomen to eradicate Cold from the body and restore proper blood flow. Moxa feels like a warm hug!

I joke with all of you that the REAL reason you all come to acupuncture is to have the foot lamp on you.

I GET IT. It's the freakin best. You're all my little lizards powering up under the heat!

HOWEVER!

Infrared Light has many healing properties:
🚨helps our cells regenerate and repair
🚨improves natural production of collagen, which is great for joint and connective tissue
🚨increases blood flow and circulation (making it ideal for pain!)
🚨activates the immune response by helping carry waste out of the body
🚨promotes the release of ATP (energy!)
🚨decreases inflammation
🚨and it's warrrrrrrm - all acus want to constantly stress the importance of warmth to you - in all things - in all areas of life - keeping feet, legs, low back and especially belly warm promotes optimal health

This is the one of the gentlest ways to support your healing at every treatment. Bask in it.

It's here. It's happening. We're in it, friends.

😒 ALLERGIES 😒

Lots of you this week complaining of those tell-tale symptoms - itchy eyes, runny nose, congestion, inflamed sinuses, skin rash, fatigue, the list goes on.

Luckily, acupuncture and herbs can do A LOT for you. Not only does acupuncture reduce inflammation, it gives your immune system a little nudge.

These points needled on my face are popular and effective for sinus congestion, but we'll choose points on your whole body to stimulate circulation, increase gut health, and promote optimal organ function, especially of your Lungs, Spleen, and Liver.

Read more in the slides about acu and herbal therapy for allergies!

OTHER TIPS:
🤧 Neti pot. Neti pot every night or every morning (make sure the water is filtered or distilled!)
🛀🏻 Rinse in the shower before getting into bed
👚 If you've been outside all day, when you get home, change your clothes right away so you're not transferring allergens onto your furniture
🌊 Hydrate like your mucous membranes depend on it (because they do)
🫚 A bite of kraut or kimchi a day will go a long way for your gut microbiome

Allergies don't HAVE to blow.
