The third agreement states, don't make assumptions.
I took my first 200 hour yoga teacher training in the style of YogaHour. During that training I learned many sage pieces of advice that I continue to use to this day. One of the gems that I practice the most is the use of "I statements". In the YogaHour teacher training manual one of the writers wrote, "When I speak in first person, the delivery feels more relate-able and real. It also puts me in a more vulnerable state; but opening up in front of my students is one way for me to build trust." This has stuck with me since I first read it. It allows me to speak openly and honestly about my own personal experience. It also creates the space where I don't make assumptions that any other person has had the same experience as I have or feels the same as I do about one particular thing.
By not making assumptions I allow myself to ask the necessary questions, I'm able to express what I really want, and I communicate clearly to (attempt to) avoid misunderstandings, etc.
This is a practice that can be cultivated. It takes awareness, community and conversation.
I would love for you to join me on retreat in beautiful Sayulita Mexico November 8-12. We will deep dive into The Four Agreements, practice yoga and even have some adventure! It would be a great joy to have you there.
