Always allow 1-2 hours after feedings to allow time to prevent "Bloat." This has happened to one of our puppies, and it was very scary for the Owners! (chime in on the comments, CT) When the pups (dogs too) eat too fast, and then run around and jump around, their stomach can twist up, and it can be fatal, quickly.
The Danger Of GDV Or Bloat In Dogs (what is it, symptoms ...
Bloat, also known as gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in dogs, particularly those with deep, narrow chests like the Belgian Malinois. When a dog bloats, their stomach fills with gas and can twist on itself, cutting off blood supply to vital organs.
Elaboration:
High Risk:
Malinois are at higher risk due to their deep chests and narrow build.
Symptoms:
Bloat can manifest as retching, restlessness, an enlarged abdomen, or the "prayer" position (front feet down, rear end up).
Emergency:
Bloat is a medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary care. Left untreated, it can be fatal within a short period, sometimes as little as 30 minutes.
Twisted Stomach:
The stomach fills with gas and can twist, cutting off blood supply and potentially causing shock.
Prevention:
Preventative surgery, such as gastropexy (tacking the stomach to the abdominal wall), can help prevent bloat, but it doesn't guarantee complete protection. Discuss this with your veterinarian.
Treatment:
Treatment typically involves decompressing the stomach, restoring blood flow, and sometimes surgery to fix the twisted stomach.
