Summer may be ending, but swimsuit safety is forever.

The Autism Society of Florida reports that children with autism are 160 times more likely to drown. You can keep your loved one safe by dressing them in swimsuit colors that are neon and vibrant to increase visibility.

These colors include bright, neon colors like orange, yellow, and green to help your loved one stand out in the water.

Avoid blues and dark colors, as they can blend into the water and make it difficult to spot your loved one.

While bright swimsuit colors improve visibility, active supervision is the key to keeping your child safe.

Per the current code of ethics: The permission given by an individual with the legal right to consent before participating in services or research, or allowing their information to be used or shared. Vocal or nonvocal verbal behavior that can be taken to indicate willingness to participate in research or behavioral services by individuals who cannot provide informed consent (e.g., because of age or intellectual impairments).

Every voice matters, whether it’s spoken, signed, shown, or shared.

Happy 4th of July from Team PBS! 🎆🇺🇸

The 4th of July can be a fun family day for all, however it’s important to learn how to ensure your child has a sensory-friendly experience throughout the day as they join in on the fun. The PBS Ethics Committee shares a few tips on how to ensure a sensory-friendly environment that your child can feel comforted in, while prioritizing safety during the events of the day:

1. Use visual aids, social stories, or videos to explain fireworks, parades, and gatherings!
2. Reminders for what can upset your child and how to support them the day of can keep everyone happy.
3. Set up any needed sensory-related tools.
4. Plan for quiet places where your child can retreat if they become overwhelmed.
5. Have a plan in place in case your child gets lost or separated from you.

Summer doesn’t wait — and neither should water safety.

It’s officially summer, and there’s no better time to prioritize water safety for your child. Children with autism are often drawn to water but may not recognize its dangers.

Some ways to support water safety include installing pool fences, using door alarms, enrolling in swim lessons, supervising at ALL times, learning CPR, prepping with social stories, and planning ahead for loud noises, visuals, floaties, and transitions during lessons.

With a little preparation, pool days can be both fun and safe — even on the hottest days.
