Regular postpartum visits assessing mental as well as physical health are imperative. Weekly home visits for those with greater need would be life saving.

The Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review Board, in partnership with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, found that 80% of deaths between 2018 and 2022 were preventable. A total of 350 women died in that time frame.

It’s wrong that so many of us never learned that some people continued to be enslaved for 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Our history books told just part of the story, and I didn’t learn about Juneteenth until middle age.

Juneteenth is about freedom—and that includes the freedom to nourish, nurture, and raise our children in health and dignity. Breastfeeding is a radical act of reclaiming our bodies, our babies, and our traditions.
