A quick one tonight.

I hear this a lot.

A neurodivergent kid is doing well with supports and accommodations in place. So they get removed?

Nope.

That kid is able to do well because they are supported.

Don’t be taking that support away.

Yeah?

And this is so important to remember as a CRP when spelling with clients. Actually, this is important to remember in all aspects of life!

You've probably heard "presume competence", but what does it mean?

➡️ we assume the child understands what we are saying (whether they are speaking or non-speaking)

➡️ because of this, we don't talk about kids in front of them

➡️ we are guided by the fact that all children can learn

➡️ presuming competence is a strength-based approach

I once had twins in my class at the elementary level. They were both non-speaking. However, one could sing "Life Is A Highway" by Rascal Flatts. If we made the assumption that they were non-speaking, so they couldn't read, we would have robbed those boys of the opportunity to show us what they were capable of and learn new skills.

Our job is to be a detective and find different ways for autistic children to show us what they know. For these boys, it was printing pictures of country singers, printing out the written names, and watching them shine. They were able to match each written name to the correct pictures.

We did not teach them that and if we wouldn't have presumed competence, we would have never known that this was a skill they ALREADY HAD! 🔥

This sweet girl has a message for new Spellers. Listen up, the best advice comes from the Spellers themselves!

TRY TO STAY CALM. SPELLING IS THE KEY TO UNLOCK YOUR TRAPPED WORDS. YOU ARE HEARD SO BE PATIENT AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. ALL TIME FAVORITE THING TO DO IS COMMUNICATE THE THOUGHTS THAT NOBODY BELIEVES I HAVE. FOR EXAMPLE, HEARING PEOPLE TALK AGAINST ME ABOUT HOW STUPID I AM HURTS ME BUT NOW I AM ABLE TO USE MY LETTERBOARD TO SHOW THAT I’M SMARTER THAN THEM. HAVE SOMEONE BRING A LETTERBOARD EVERYWHERE YOU GO, THIS WAY YOU HAVE ACCESS TO RELIABLE COMMUNICATION AT ALL TIMES.

Way to go Rissa!🤍
