The residents went on a scenic drive through Lone Elk Park. It was a beautiful day for such an outing. While driving through the park, we saw a lot of wildlife in the area. We saw bison, elk, deer, raccoons, and even baby raccoons.

The park's acreage was once part of the Tyson Valley Powder Plant, which was used for the testing and storage of ammunition during World War II. After the war, the area became a county park, and in 1948, herds of elk and bison were established. The land was re-acquired by the federal government during the Korean War, and for safety reasons, the wildlife herds were destroyed in 1958. However, one lone bull elk survived.

In 1964, St. Louis County reacquired a portion of the original tract from the General Services Administration. In 1966, the park’s name was changed from Tyson Park to Lone Elk County Park. That same year, six additional elk were obtained from Yellowstone National Park through the efforts of the children of the Rockwood School District and the West St. Louis County Lions Club.

The park was officially opened to the public on October 17, 1971. Six bison were acquired from the St. Louis Zoo in July 1971.

This summer, we are making sure to go on an outing each week that the residents have picked for the month of July. We plan to continue these weekly outings until the weather gets colder.
This past week, we visited Memorial Garden in Arnold. The weather was beautiful, and the residents, Tom, and I enjoyed walking through the garden. The residents especially loved it—two of the gentlemen are veterans, and they enjoyed taking pictures by the displays representing their branches of service.
Ruby shared that her late husband was in the Navy, and she proudly posed by the Navy display in his honor. She truly enjoyed reminiscing and honoring his memory.
After the garden, we decided to go to Cracker Barrel—everyone voted for it! We had a great lunch together and are already looking forward to our next outing.

We had a wonderful time on the 4th of July! The residents and I enjoyed a good old-fashioned holiday and reminisced about the 4th of July celebrations from the past. We had entertainment come in, and he played some great old-fashioned patriotic songs. All the residents knew and loved the songs he performed.
We were served classic root beer floats and delicious cookies as we enjoyed James' singing. We had planned to play a lot of games outside, but since the temperature was in the 90s, we stayed indoors and enjoyed spending time together.
It was also great to see many residents going out with their families, and some family members stayed to enjoy the music with us. Overall, it was a special and memorable day!

The residents had another wonderful outing to River City Casino. They had been looking forward to it all last week. It was a great time seeing everyone enjoy the slot machines, playing poker, and trying out other games at the casino. After playing multiple games, they had a delicious and flavorful lunch. Afterward, we returned and told the other residents how much fun everyone had. We will definitely be going back to the casino!

Friends Jan and Vera enjoy chatting and "solving all of the world's problems together," they laugh.

The first few times they saw each other at Holiday Vista de la Montan͂a after Vera moved in, they waved cordially and said hi, but they hadn't had a chance to get to know one another. Then one day, it clicked. "We both finally realized that we have been next door neighbors this whole time. We both just couldn't believe it, and we thought that was so hilarious," Jan says.

"Not only is it great to live in the same community as a really good friend, but to have them as your neighbor is even better," adds Vera. "Every resident should get out more often in the community to talk to other residents because hey, you never know, they just might be your neighbor." 😉

“Whether it’s seniors or celebrities, food is love,” she says. “And if you can share that – on any scale – you’ve won.”

Larry, a 100-year-old resident of Holiday Country Squire, has seen more than most!

As a World War II combat veteran with the 29th Infantry Division, he spent his 20th birthday in a foxhole, dodging bullets on the front lines in Germany. “I had a chunk blown out of the collar of my overcoat,” he recalls. “That’s how close it got.”

Nearly 81 years later, he’s raised a family, cared for his wife through illness, and even run a successful sewing machine business after the war.

Through it all, he has this message to share: War should be avoided, clean living matters and helping others is always worth it.

At 98 years old, Adeline is living proof that movement is the secret to vitality – and she has no plans to slow down.

“You just have to keep moving,“ she shares. Five days a week, Adeline leads a lively aerobics class for her fellow residents at Holiday Thornton Place. “Every once in a while, there’s a day I don’t feel like it, but the group still shows up – and we go.”

Adeline has lived at the community for nearly a decade. She’s a former VA telephone operator with a sharp sense of humor (yes, she admits to eavesdropping back in the day) and a lifelong seamstress who has crafted more than 90 bridesmaid dresses and several wedding gowns. She’s fluent in German and occasionally calls out exercise reps in her second language, just to keep things interesting.

Still independent and full of energy, Adeline remains the heart of her community.

Holiday Orchid Terrace Farmers Market
We offered fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, and baked goods. Everyone enjoyed shopping and spending time together. Residents paid for the produce with tickets they earned by attending activities. These tickets could then be used to purchase items at the market. We all enjoyed eating our fresh fruits and vegetables! The residents and I enjoy all the company we had just enjoy the day with each other.

June’s Taste of England lunch transported residents to Great Britain with a flavorful menu featuring potato leek soup, bangers and mash served with peas and onions, and strawberries & cream. Residents and their friends savored the experience, which was complemented by a screening of the period piece Downton Abbey, which follows the story of the Crawley family from the hit TV show of the same name.

We can't wait to see – and taste – the cuisine from our destination next month!

Elsie has lived through more than a century of history – and she’s still going strong at 101.

Her German ancestors crossed the Atlantic in the 1800s, brewing beer on the ship because, as she puts it, “They believed beer was essential.” Elsie, however, prefers a different vice: a good old-fashioned doughnut. 🍩

During WWII, she worked in the government’s alcohol unit, tracking taxes and double-checking every cent. “It was interesting work,” she says. “We had to be accurate. Every cent mattered.”

Now living at Holiday Country Squire, Elsie remains sharp, active and full of stories worth savoring – maybe over a cruller.

The residents from Orchard Terrace went on a field trip to Eckert’s in Belleville, IL. We enjoyed shopping at the country store, picking up fresh fruits and vegetables, and sampling delicious baked goods. We also had a one-of-a-kind tasting experience at Eckert’s Cider and a fabulous lunch at the Eckert’s restaurant. Most of all, we enjoyed spending quality time together.
