🔹Sexual Orientation OCD🔹
a subset of OCD/intrusions where the person has intrusive thoughts about not knowing their sexual orientation for certain. People often worry that they may secretly be gay/straight and not know it yet. They may pay close attention to how they interact with others and who they notice as attractive, always trying to “figure out” their sexualities. People with SO OCD may avoid seeing people/types of people/couples that may trigger these thoughts.
What Sexual Orientation OCD is NOT:
Homophobia! SO OCD is ultimately the fear of not/never knowing your ‘true’ sexuality. It’s not actually about the sexuality itself. Q***r people can suffer from SO OCD & worry that they may be straight!
It also doesn’t mean anything about you as a person. It says nothing about your character - like all OCD, it’s just a brain glitch.
As with all intrusive thoughts from OCD, people use compulsions to relieve the anxiety the thoughts induce.
Compulsions could include things like:
▪️researching sexuality to compare your experience
▪️watching p**n of another sexuality to “test” yourself
▪️monitoring emotions & physical feelings to check for attraction
▪️asking for reassurance from loved ones that you really are the sexuality you say
▪️+ more!
OCD can be treated by a therapist using a specific type of CBT called Exposure-Response Prevention (ERP)!
Hope is real and help is out there.

🔹Perinatal OCD🔹
a subset of OCD/intrusions where the person has intrusive thoughts about their baby. This can happen during pregnancy and after birth. The thoughts are often more aggressive in nature, about hurting the baby in some way. The intrusions can present as thoughts, images, urges, or sensations. It can affect the mama who gave birth or the partner!
What Perinatal OCD is NOT:
Perinatal OCD is NOT Postpartum Depression or Postpartum Psychosis. The obsessions go against the sufferer’s values, unlike in depression and present differently than in psychosis.
It does not mean you want to hurt your baby, don’t love your baby, or are a bad parent. It does not mean you are crazy or going to struggle forever. It doesn’t say anything about a person’s character or values!
As with all intrusive thoughts from OCD, people use compulsions to relieve the anxiety the thoughts induce.
Compulsions could include things like:
▪️not spending time alone with baby
▪️avoiding sharp objects/staircases/balconies
▪️monitoring/checking your feelings towards baby
▪️avoidance of breastfeeding
▪️strict rules around washing baby or self
▪️neutralizing scary thoughts by counting/tapping/checking
▪️rituals around carseats/baby’s safety
▪️+ more!
Perinatal OCD can be treated by a therapist using a specific type of CBT called Exposure-Response Prevention (ERP)! It’s safe to do during pregnancy and often you can work with your clinician around scheduling/bringing baby to session.
It’s so important to bring awareness of this subtype because access to good care is often limited by doctors and other helping professionals not knowing about it and the stigma.
Hope is real and help is out there.
Thanks for the amazing talk on Perinatal OCD at this year’s OCD Conference!

🔹Relationship OCD🔹
a subset of OCD where the person has intrusive thoughts about their relationship and/or significant other. These thoughts can be about not loving the partner, fear of cheating on the partner, fear of not being attracted to the partner, inverses of all these, + more.
WHAT ROCD IS NOT: Proof that you don’t love your SO. It doesn’t mean you are a bad partner. It doesn’t mean you’ll never have a good/loving/healthy relationship. It does not mean that you will ‘ruin’ your relationship (OCD may try - but with help you can kick that s**t to the curb!!).
As with all intrusive thoughts from OCD, people use compulsions to relieve the anxiety the thoughts induce.

Compulsions could include things like:
▪️asking your partner if they still love you
▪️avoiding certain love songs or romantic movies
▪️monitoring/checking your feelings towards your partner
▪️going on tons of dates out of fear of being alone when you don’t actually even want to date
▪️compring your relationship to others
▪️asking others about your relationship
▪️+ more!
ROCD can be treated by a therapist using a specific type of CBT called Exposure-Response Prevention (ERP)! Hope is real and help is out there.

WHAT HARM OCD IS:
a subset of OCD where the person has intrusive thoughts about hurting others or themselves. These thoughts are repetitive, relentless, graphic, and visceral. They can be debilitating to the sufferer.
WHAT HARM OCD IS NOT:
A reflection of your character or morals. It does not mean you are more likely to actually hurt someone or that you want to hurt someone. It does not not make you a bad person - at all!
As with all intrusive thoughts from OCD, people use compulsions to relieve the anxiety they induce.
Compulsions can include:
▪️avoidance (hiding sharp objects, not driving a car, thought/stopping)
▪️checking (looking in the rearview mirror compulsively while driving, checking that you didn’t put poison in someone’s food)
▪️reassurance (asking others for reassurance that everything is okay/you are okay, can also be giving yourself reassurance)
▪️researching (googling your thoughts, researching violent crimes/criminals to compare yourself to)
▪️& more!
Harm OCD can be treated by a therapist using a specific type of CBT called Exposure-Response Prevention (ERP)! Hope is real and help is out there.

Growth happens outside of our comfort zones! If we want to learn, heal, grow, or connect in meaningful ways, we have to embrace the discomfort.
It’s hard, but you can do hard things.
