Taking significant time to grow between shows is one of the most important components of but only IF you're actually growing.
This is what separates the people who show up year after year to the same shows with the same tired physique we've seen 100 times and the people who ascend from one level to the next every year.
is growing and ascending. He's doing things differently than ever before. He's used guidance to get out of his comfort zone and do what's necessary to improve. Training is different, nutrition is way different and most importantly, his physique is different.
Side note: this has required zero increase (I actually believe a significant decrease) in "supplementation."

I truly cannot tell you how many times I heard this sentence recited verbatim at last weekend. And I know the assumption will be "edited pics, filters," etc. We're past that in '21. Everyone knows when pics are manipulated now.
These people actually looked good when those pics were taken. But then they were told to "decrease sodium values by 22%, deplete, s**t load, drop water, take .5 Lasix at 3:47 AM 12 minutes after 6.2 oz of pedialyte and 16 minutes before eating 4 pieces of pizza crust before going back to sleep for 2 hours."
Then on stage, the ONLY time the look matters, they look like they did 5 weeks prior. If you look on stage the way you look in the gym post workout 7 days out, you peaked perfectly. It doesn't take a hail mary.

and I have been friends and occasional training partners for over a decade. To be able to play this type of roll while he's ascending at this rate is an honor and a privilege for me.
We think very similarly about the nuances of the sport so the Xs and Os are super easy. Literally the least amount of work I've ever had to do for a prep as far as the plan goes. My biggest role is being the anxiety reducer down the stretch.
As for the future, you'll see a 3rd version of this pic before next year. He's past the stage of taking a full year to grow between every show. He's knocking on the door. The time to kick that motherlf**ker off it's hinges is almost here. We haven't finalized a decision for the next show but there's a tentative plan. I'll let him announce it.

.reid57 just had the craziest final few weeks of a prep that I've ever seen in my life. Despite making no dietary or cardio adjustments, his body decided it was going to drop 29 lbs in 2 weeks. Never seen anything like it but it resulted in is lower body matching the already crispy condition through his upper body. It was a week long balancing act bringing him in with that hardness AND as much fullness as possible. So we loaded everyday for the whole week and kept water high the whole time. Due to unforeseeable circumstances, we may have been better off loading even a HARDER and sacrificed a little of the detail but you never plan for that.
Either way, this mf right here is the real deal. One of the extremely few clients I've had that lives it to the fullest every single day during prep AND offseason. That's the reason he may have been the most conditioned person in the show and the reason he'll continue to improve every time you see him on stage.

To be clear, pulled off this much growth in his own. I do the prep but he's in charge once it's time to grow. I'm just posting it since he's too modest to do it himself.
This is the result of flawlessly executing through the entirety of two straight offseasons. 99% of people don't have the discipline to pull this off, myself included. People think prep is a grind...well if you TRULY want to maximize what you're capable of "prep" never stops. The amount of calories and cardio change but the discipline, structure and work stay the same year round.

There's so much to be said about these two. Both so young and brand new to the sport but they execute like they've been at it their whole life.
And all that means to me is that they're great clients. Bodybuilding is unforgiving and cruel at times. You can do everything perfectly and still walk away empty handed.
The icing on the cake for and is that they both came home with hardware and technically a national qualification.
Kaite is 2-0 in her career which started this spring. Two shows, two class wins.
Grace just decided to take this journey a few months ago and secured a 2nd place finish in her first show.

Can't remember the last time I saw a local midwestern show with this type of quality in the overall, if ever. Every year at the big national shows there are a couple guys that show up and everyone says "WHO THE F**K IS THAT!?" Well here they are...
Congrats to for the win. Looking forward to seeing it again in 5 weeks bro.
and I have been friends, training partners and colleagues for a decade at this point and I think yesterday was the most fu***ng pumped I've been for him in that entire time. Ticket punched to Nationals despite plenty of adversity the past few weeks, especially yesterday morning.
Now we have another 5 weeks to blow this s**t out of the water and bring something truly scary to Orlando. All gas from here on out.

Let's get this party started Des Moines! Pumped about this group. Can't wait to put the finishing touches on everything ...

A 100lb dumbell row isn't 'heavy' if you're pull it like you're starting a lawn mower. A 75lb dumbell row is 'heavy' as f**k if you're pulling with your shoulder depressed, shoulders parallel to the ground and no momentum.
Take some time trying to do things better rather than just 'heavier.' If your ex*****on is bad in an attempt to move more weight you're missing the entire point.

4 years ago Saturday I received a phone call that we lost in a tragic car accident. Kristie was a client and very close friend and her passing came just a few weeks after being in Phoenix to hang and train with her and a couple other clients. I was fortunate enough to do that with her a couple times in addition to meeting in person when she made her only national level appearance at '16 (depicted here).
I said I'd post about her every year at this time because she was a special person and I'm very proud to have known her. Aside from that, she was very open with me about her personal life including some demons she faced with depression and often a poor relationship with food.
Without getting too wordy I just want to point out that bodybuilding is an amazing sport and hobby but there should be certain things that ALWAYS take precedence over it.
The stage isn't going anywhere. If you're struggling badly with body dysmorphia, disordered eating habits, self image related anxiety, etc. just wait. You may not need to remove yourself entirely from the sport but take some time to figure out what's triggering you and reassess. Not only will it make you a stronger bodybuilder in the long run but it'll improve other aspects of your life. And again, bodybuilding will still be there when you're mentally ready.
One of the last conversations Kristie and I ever had was in reference to pulling her out of . She looked amazing. She was going to be ready ahead of schedule. She had just checked in and I was very pleased with the look but she texted me telling me she was having a really hard time. Not because she wasn't dedicated. Not because it wasn't a priority. Not because she didn't have the work ethic. She was starting to relapse with with her ED. So I said, let's pull out and take the focus off how how she looks and work on fixing the problem. Tragically, life was cruel enough not to give her much time to get better but her appreciation for my support and understanding meant more to me than any trophy ever has.
Always make your own health and happiness you're #1 priority. Everything else will improve too
