If these walls could talk…

While in Chicago for a wedding, we stopped by 345 E. Superior—the original RIC (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago). This building holds 83 days of our lives that we will never forget. It’s where Lauren fought her way back to us. As painful and exhausting as that time was, this place became sacred ground for us.

It now stands vacant, with a newer, shinier version a block away—renamed the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. But this sidewalk… this building… they hold echoes of hope, fear, tears, and tiny victories.

Every morning, I would walk down that sidewalk clinging to hope. Every night, I’d walk it again, drained and tearful, wondering if healing would ever come. The amount of prayers and tears poured out here by families like ours is immeasurable.

This place shaped our story. It broke us and began to rebuild us. And for all of it—the pain, the progress, the people—we are forever grateful.

Thank you, RIC.

Came across Lauren’s 8th grade autobiography project today—and wow, the memories. Her letter to her little sisters hit me right in the feels. 🥹 “Never Giving Up” has always been her mantra, even back then.

The cartoon she drew about sleeping through the chaos at the Murphy house? Had me laughing out loud—some things never change! 💕😂

Her handwriting changed after her accident, but she still signs her name with a smiley face. 😊

The first photo was taken at the annual St. Norbert moms’ day at the ballpark in 2013. Lauren had planned to fly home from NY to surprise me at the game—but her accident happened just weeks before. My friend Sandy had LM Cardinals hats made and even sent one out to me in LA.

Today, they took another group photo—many of the same beautiful faces.

I love full circle moments.
The little things are always the big things. ❤️⚾️

One of the best parts of our job is connecting with the audience after we speak. These photos are from an event back in December, and they still make us smile. It never ceases to amaze me how easily Lauren lights up a room.
One of our favorite things to hear afterward is, “I wasn’t sure how your story would relate to me—but now it’s crystal clear... and life-changing.

We had the pleasure of sharing Lauren’s story at the Excellence Summit for the State of Missouri Division of Senior and Disability Services. These folks do amazing things for some of the most vulnerable people in our state. Walker loves snuggling with his mom when we travel. (She doesn’t let him on her bed at home) 🐕‍🦺

Lauren had a great week inspiring hundreds of people. Tuesday we spoke to a large group at Bunge Headquarters St Louis. We flew to Boston on Wednesday to present at the Brain Injury conference of Massachusetts. On the flight home Lauren and Walker enjoyed a beautiful sunset from 30,000 feet. 🐕‍🦺 ✈️ “It is almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream“

Dave, Lauren and I were honored to be part of a small group representing MO on Capitol Hill for National Brain Injury Awareness Day. Lauren was one of the lucky ones, she was covered by workman’s compensation and received more services and better coverage than most TBI survivors. Our hope is that someday everyone affected by brain injury will have the same access to quality resources.
