I'm excited to share a chapter from my new book, specifically crafted to support first responders. Whether you're navigating daily challenges or seeking new ways to strengthen your response approach, this book is for you. I'll be sharing it in short chapters. Please dive in and let me know your thoughts!
Introduction: The Badge That Binds Us All
Every first responder faces a moment, usually after the academy excitement fades but before cynicism takes hold, when the weight of their commitment truly hits. It's not just the gear or emotional burden of the calls—they realize they belong to something bigger, a calling that demands all while providing meaning.
With over two decades of experience—first as a line officer, then as a supervisor, and now as chief—I’ve witnessed both the highs: split-second saves, community bonds, and meaningful work, and the lows: good people broken by a demanding system.
The statistics are stark. First responders struggle with higher rates of divorce, substance abuse, PTSD, and su***de than the general population. We face shorter lifespans and prolonged recovery from injuries. Our families bear sacrifices that most can't imagine. The very traits that make us effective—our selflessness, ability to compartmentalize pain, and perseverance—can also lead to our downfall.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
The badge should symbolize strength, not just your own but the support from your family, crew, and community. We're connected by threads of service and hope.
This book is my response. Amid heroic myths and harsh statistics lies a better way forward—one that honors both the calling and the individual who answers it, fostering lasting careers and thriving families.
Fit2Serve isn’t just another fitness or self-help guide; it’s a year-long journey for first responders and their families. Weekly, you’ll gain practical wisdom from someone who understands your unique pressures and believes in your potential to not only survive but to flourish.
The chapters ahead reflect real experiences from my journey and those of countless first responders, including spouses learning to share their partners and veterans maintaining health and purpose. They acknowledge the struggles of rookies trying to navigate a demanding world.
Most importantly, they are filled with hope.
