Happy Saturday 🌻 The sunshine and milder temperatures feel like such a gift this time of year.

As a doula, I love reminding my pregnancy and postpartum mamas that being outside isn’t just “nice”, it’s deeply supportive for your body and nervous system.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Psalm 19:1

There is something sacred about stepping into creation while your body is creating life. The same God who designed the sun to rise each morning also designed your body with intention and wisdom.

During Pregnancy
Improves circulation → Gentle walks help reduce swelling and support healthy blood flow.
Boosts mood naturally → Sunlight increases serotonin, which can ease anxiety and pregnancy blues.
Supports sleep → Natural light exposure helps regulate your circadian rhythm.
Encourages movement without strain → Walking outdoors is one of the safest, most beneficial forms of prenatal exercise.

During Postpartum
Regulates the nervous system → Fresh air + natural light help calm the stress response (especially in those tender early weeks).
Supports milk production → Lower stress hormones help oxytocin flow more freely.
Reduces risk of postpartum depression → Daily sunlight exposure is protective for mental health.
Helps babies too → Daylight exposure supports newborn circadian rhythm development.

Even 10–20 minutes on the porch, a slow stroller walk, or sitting barefoot in the grass can be grounding.

If you’re pregnant or newly postpartum today, consider this your gentle nudge: step outside, feel the warmth on your face, take a deep breath, and let your body soften. Creation itself testifies to His faithfulness, and so does the life you are growing or nurturing. 💛

Even lactation consultants get clogged ducts. 🙃
Yep.
All the training.
All the certifications.
All the experience.

And sometimes… your body still humbles you.

This week I’m walking the walk, managing a tender clogged duct while still mom-ing, working, and reminding myself of the same advice I give my clients:

🔸️Gentle lymphatic massage (not deep tissue!)
🔸️ Ice, not heat
🔸️ Regular milk removal without over-pumping
🔸️Rest (as much as a mom realistically can)
🔸️ Supportive bra, not restrictive

The biggest shift in recent years? We now understand clogged ducts are primarily inflammation, not “milk stuck that needs to be aggressively pushed out.” More force is not more helpful. Gentle support > aggressive treatment.

And can we just normalize that breastfeeding is super hard work and mother's bodies are still human bodies? Even when you know all the things.

If symptoms escalate (fever, flu-like symptoms, worsening redness), that’s when we want to loop in your provider to rule out mastitis.

Motherhood keeps us humble, even those of us who teach and support others through it.

If you need help navigating feeding challenges, I’m here to support you.

Happy Monday! A new post is up on The Woven Journal

“You’re Not Weak for Wanting Support: What a Doula Really Does (and Why It Matters Most Before Labor)”

This one is for first-time parents, VBAC families, and anyone quietly wondering if support is really necessary, especially when pregnancy feels medical, high-risk, or overwhelming.

It’s about:
• why modern parents aren’t meant to do this alone
• what doulas actually do during pregnancy (not just labor)
• how evidence-based support and advocacy can make a difference
• and why wanting help is wisdom, not failure

If you’ve been on the fence, this post was written with you in mind.

Lately I’ve been reminded that motherhood isn’t something we were ever meant to do alone. Life feels so full, full of schedules, big emotions, laundry piles, dishes in the sink, sweet moments, and sometimes pure utter chaos. God designed us for community and support, especially as mothers.

Hebrews 10:24–25
“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching."

Support isn’t just something we need during pregnancy, birth, or postpartum… it’s something we need throughout all of motherhood and life.

Isaiah 41:10
"Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."

That’s one of the reasons I feel so honored to do the work I do as a doula, lactation counselor and birth assistant, being invited to walk alongside families during such intimate and emotional seasons, reminding them they don’t have to navigate it alone.

If you’re in a season that feels heavy, I just want to remind you today: you are seen, you are held, you are loved and you are not alone ❤️

It’s been a minute since I last shared a blog post here; my last one was back in September 2025.

Life, work, and holding space for families had me living the words more than writing them for a while, but this felt important to come back to.

I just published a new post on The Woven Journal:

✨ “When Trauma Lives in the Body: Doula Support for VBAC” ✨

This one is especially for anyone carrying a previous birth experience into this pregnancy, whether that shows up as hesitation, anxiety, or a quiet voice wondering, “Do I really need support this time?”

We talk about:
• How birth trauma can live in the body and nervous system
• Why “moving on” isn’t always simple
• What support can look like when planning a VBAC
• And why wanting support doesn’t mean something is wrong, it means you’re listening to yourself

If you’ve been on the fence, or if your body remembers more than your mind wants to admit, this post was written with you in mind.

As always, no pressure, just an open invitation to reflect, learn, and feel a little less alone.

The big baby trial research paper is a masterclass in how to manipulate your study results to suit your purposes. Don’t take my word for it, read it for yourself.

Search for the paper, ‘Induction of labour vs standard care to prevent shoulder dystocia in fetuses suspected to be large for gestational age in the UK (the big baby trial)

Then have a listen to The Great Birth Rebellion episodes 152 and 186 to understand the research and options for big babies.

✨ Why We Say: Wait Until the Umbilical Cord Is White ✨

Delayed cord clamping isn’t about a stopwatch, it’s about honoring your baby’s physiology.
At birth, about 1/3 of your baby’s total blood supply is still in the placenta and umbilical cord. That blood is meant for your baby.
Here’s what happens during those first sacred minutes:

🧡 Roughly half of that cord blood is directed to the lungs, helping them expand and transition to breathing air.
🧡 The other half supports the rest of the body, the brain, organs, circulation, and temperature regulation.

The umbilical cord continues to pulse and deliver this blood for an average of 2–5 minutes after birth. When the cord becomes white and no longer pulsing, that transfer is complete.

💡 Important myth to clear up:
Once baby is born, the umbilical cord becomes a one-way system. Blood flows into the baby only, it does not flow back into the placenta. That blood is never “lost” or “taken away” from the baby unless the cord is clamped early.

Delayed cord clamping supports:
• Smoother respiratory transition
• Higher iron stores
• Improved circulation and blood volume
• A gentler start to life outside the womb

Sometimes the most powerful support we can give a newborn… is simply time.

Breastfeeding is natural - but it is also learned.

Early feeding challenges don't mean your body is failing or that something is "wrong". Most often, they simply mean you and your baby need skilled, compassionate support as you learn together.

How do you know when support might help? Signs can include:
• Persistent ni**le or breast pain beyond the first few feeds
• Latch that feels uncomfortable or inconsistent
• Baby showing frustration, fussiness, or long feeds without satisfaction
• Concerns about weight gain or feeding frequency

It's important to know that pain is NOT a normal part of breastfeeding. While some discomfort can happen in the very first latch or two, ongoing pain is a signal that adjustments or support are needed.

• Persistent ni**le or breast pain beyond the first few feeds
• Latch that feels uncomfortable or inconsistent
• Baby showing frustration, fussiness, or long feeds without satisfaction
• Concerns about weight gain or feeding frequency

With the right guidance, breastfeeding can become more comfortable, more confident, and more joyful for both you and your baby!
Lactation support isn't about perfection; it's about protecting your goals and your confidence as a parent. In the early weeks a lactation counselor can:

🌿 The Power of Words in Labor 🌿

In the intensity of labor, our minds are just as active as our bodies. The words spoken in those sacred moments can shift everything, bringing peace, courage, and strength right when it’s needed most.

Words of affirmation and encouragement aren’t just comforting; they’re powerful tools designed by God. Speaking life, “You are safe.” “God is with you in every breath.” “Your body was fearfully and wonderfully made for this.”, can calm fear, release tension, and help contractions do their beautiful work.

When we align our words with God’s truth, we create an atmosphere of peace and confidence. Partners, doulas, and birth teams, your voice matters! Speak faith, speak hope, speak life.

✨ Each word has the power to remind a mother of the divine strength within her and the holy sacred purpose in her labor.

✨ Let’s Talk About Cervical Checks ✨

It’s common during labor for people to focus on how many centimeters dilated they are, but here’s the truth: a cervical check is only a small snapshot of what’s happening. It doesn’t tell the full story of labor’s progress or how much longer things will take.

Dilation is just one piece of the puzzle. We also look at:
🌿 Effacement: how soft and thinned the cervix has become.
🌿 Baby’s station: how low the baby’s head is in the pelvis.
🌿 Position and flexibility of the cervix itself.

But even those numbers don’t always show what’s really happening.

When it comes to cervical checks, less is more.
Each check carries a small but real risk of introducing bacteria and increasing the chance of infection, especially once the water has broken. Beyond the physical risks, there’s also an emotional aspect. Hearing numbers like “only 3 centimeters” or “no change yet” can plant seeds of doubt, frustration, or discouragement even when progress is happening in ways that can’t be measured by fingers.

Stress and discouragement can cause the body to release stress hormones, which may actually slow labor down. That’s why a calm, supportive environment and patience are so powerful.

It’s also important to remember that a woman has the right to say no to any cervical check if she chooses. A laboring woman is always in charge of her body and her birth experience; she can say yes or no to as much or as little as she wants. This is one of the many reasons having a doula can be so valuable: to help build confidence, support her decisions, and remind her that her voice matters every step of the way. 💪💜

As doulas, we pay close attention to the mother herself, her sounds, movements, and energy. A birthing woman who’s allowed to move freely and follow her instincts will often begin to:
✨ Get lower to the ground- squatting, swaying, leaning forward.
✨ Turn more inward- eyes closed, breath deep, conserving focus.
✨ Make deep, primal sounds that help the baby descend.
✨ Sometimes, even a purple line that appears just above the buttocks, a natural sign that the body is opening beautifully.

Labor is a process that unfolds in its own rhythm, and no single check can measure the wisdom of the body. Trusting the process and the cues of both body and baby tells us far more than numbers ever could.
