From Scarcity to Abundance With Dr. David Samuels

Hi, I'm Doctor David Samuels. I am a board certified psychiatrist and I have been practicing psychiatry for over 20 years. I’d like to share a simple way to summarize everything I’ve learned about psychology over the years. At its core, it comes down to three ideas: scarcity creates stress, abundance creates healing, and focus shapes perception.
When we focus on scarcity—whether it’s a lack of time, money, or love—the mind reacts with stress. That stress drives short-term survival thinking, often at the cost of long-term well-being. The problem is, in our modern world, most of us are not facing immediate threats, yet our brains still respond as if we are.
Instead, shifting toward abundance thinking—reminding ourselves that there is plenty of love, plenty of opportunity, and plenty of success—moves the mind into a more creative and resourceful state. This is where growth, healing, and progress truly happen.
The key is focus and perception. Every day, we can choose to focus on signs of scarcity or on signals of abundance. Both exist, but what we train our minds to notice determines how we feel and how we live. And since our brains naturally lean toward the negative, we have to be intentional about training ourselves to notice abundance.
By doing so, we create a healthier mind, reduce stress, and open the door to greater possibilities.
If you ever find yourself struggling with stress, anxiety, or mental health challenges, know that you don’t have to face it alone. At DPS Health and Wellness, we’re here to help you find balance, resilience, and healing.
