💪 Happy Labor Day! As we mark the unofficial end of summer, we also honor the work and contributions laborers have made to the development and achievements of the United States. Thanks to them, we have safer, healthier, and better balanced working conditions.

Today, we applaud the benefits and circumstances of our own jobs that these early workers fought for and made possible. While you enjoy a cookout, vacation, or couch time, celebrate the good work that you do as well! 🎉

We were excited to host the OneBlood Big Red Bus today! We're a bit tucked away from the main drag, so we were pleased to have four donors come out and donate four units. 🩸

Since each unit can help three people in need, we ended the drive by being able to support 12 people! That includes folks who are struggling with chronic disease, fighting back after a devastating accident, in need of a transfusion, or a variety of other reasons.

Thanks to everyone who came out, and please stay tuned for our future drives. We'd love to have your support at an upcoming event!

🎳 There's just something satisfying about propelling a ball down a wooden lane to pummel a bunch of pins! To share that satisfaction, we recently took our participants for an afternoon outing to Pla Mor Lanes. Although they didn't compete against each other or keep score, everyone had a terrific time just enjoying the experience and providing support to each other. And naturally, we capped the day by stopping for ice cream on the way back to the day center!

This week, we treated our participants to a luau party, complete with leis, grass skirts, and all the trappings of Polynesian culture. To get folks actively engaged, we also welcomed Natasha Marko, owner of Betty's School of Dance, who taught us the basics of the hula. As you can see, our participants were enthralled by the lessons and were mimicking the movements with tons of interest. Mahalo nui loa, Ms. Natasha!

Happy Juneteenth! Each year, June 19, or Juneteenth, recalls the date in 1865 when all enslaved African-Americans in the US were made aware of the Emancipation Proclamation and were officially released from their bonds – some two years after President Abraham Lincoln had initially signed the proclamation. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 when President Biden signed it into law. Celebrations include picnics, rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties, historical reenactments, and blues festivals.

🍗 Our recent barbecue chicken fundraiser was a great success, and we're so grateful for everyone who came out to purchase meals, provide ingredients, make deliveries, and assemble all of the chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, rolls, and cookies.

It was truly a team effort, and we have to say the food was delicious and the plates were hefty. In the end, we raised $2500 to support our participants, so we're thrilled at being able to expand their resources and opportunities! 💵

And an extra-special thank-you to the members of South River Baptist Church, Sheryl Toukola and TheTruk TheTruk, and our IADS Board. We couldn't have done it without you! 🎉

Our caregivers support group has been a terrific source of information and conversation for attendees. We know how tough it can be to care for a loved one, so we gather folks who are experiencing the same challenges and give them some relief. On Tuesday night, we welcomed Detective Scanelli (white shirt and tie) from the Iredell County Sheriff's Office. He taught us about scams targeted at seniors and shared helpful tips about how to keep them safe from criminals who would prey on their vulnerabilities. If you'd like to join us, we meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 pm. Call 704-873-0720 for details!
