📚 ABA Terms Explained: Escape

When we say “escape” in ABA, we don’t mean running away — we mean a behavior that helps a child get out of or avoid something (like a difficult task or non-preferred activity).

Think:
🧩 “This is too hard”
😣 “I need a break”
🙅‍♂️ “I don’t want to do this”

Behavior is communication — and escape-maintained behaviors are often a child’s way of saying “this is overwhelming for me.”

At Community Horizons ABA, we work to teach safer, more functional ways to communicate those needs 💙

📚 ABA Terms Explained: Attention

Sometimes behavior is all about connection 💬

In ABA, “attention” means a behavior is happening to gain a response from others — whether that’s talking, eye contact, laughter, or even a reaction to challenging behavior.

Think:
👀 “Look at me!”
🗣️ “Talk to me!”
🤝 “Engage with me!”

Even negative attention is still attention — which is why we focus on teaching appropriate, positive ways to seek connection 💙

At Community Horizons ABA, we help turn those moments into meaningful communication and social skills that last ✨

📚 ABA Terms Explained: Tangible (Access)

Sometimes behavior is all about getting something you want 🎁

In ABA, “tangible” means a behavior is happening to gain access to a preferred item or activity — like a toy, snack, screen time, or favorite game.

Think:
🍪 “I want that snack!”
📱 “Give me the iPad!”
🧸 “I want my toy!”

When a child doesn’t yet have the words or skills to ask, behavior can step in to do the talking.

At Community Horizons ABA, we focus on teaching functional communication so children can appropriately ask for what they want and need 💙

Because every “behavior” is an opportunity to build a skill ✨

Everyday, I see post shared by a parent of a child on the Autism Spectrum, stating “I know nobody cares but…” Then they proceed to share progress their child has made. I’m not sure what has made them feel like no one cares, but one thing I can say for sure is, I care! No matter the age, that first word, the first time they use the toilet, or say mom for the first time these are big moments worth celebrating! A trip to the store without a melt down, a successful doctor visit, trying a new food, these are also worth celebrating! I’m sorry that someone has made you feel like your child’s achievements are less than others, but they’re not. If anything they’re bigger! I see you and I have been you, and still am! I know how much love, patience, and consistency has gone into your child reaching that goal. It’s not always easy but it’s so worth it! So celebrate them and celebrate you! You both deserve it! You are amazing and I care! Community Horizons ABA
