As we continue to learn more and study TMS, it is exciting to see devices getting cleared for more indications, including anxiety.

Upper Midwest TMS is now offering an anxiety treatment protocol* that can be used with our depression protocol to improve symptoms in patients struggling with both.

*Our TMS device is not FDA-cleared for anxiety, therefore any anxiety treatment at our clinic is off-label. Our protocol is modeled after those used commonly by other TMS clinics in the United States.

The FDA has granted 510(k) clearance to BrainsWay for its noninvasive Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation System to treat comorbid anxiety symptoms in adults with depression, according to a press release. This clearance allows BrainsWay to market the system to patients with major depressive disord...

TMS FAQ: Do I continue medications while getting TMS?

We do not recommend making psychotropic medication changes during your TMS course, as it can cause confusion about what treatment modality is causing which effect. That being said, adjustments such as discontinuing a medication causing intolerable side effects are sometimes unavoidable. The physicians at UMTMS can talk with your prescriber as needed to make recommendations.

Occasionally a dose of a medication needs to be held or lowered prior to treatment in order to minimize side effects. We will let you know if that's the case for your treatment. The vast majority of patients will continue to take all medications as prescribed during this time.

TMS FAQ: What is with your weird hours?

Dr. Olivas and Schock work full-time as general psychiatrists at Sanford Health in Fargo. They opened this clinic in addition to and independent of their full time practice seeing the need to expand access to quality, evidence-based, psychiatric care in our area. As such, they do their consults and motor mappings outside of other work obligations, which is why you may see us early or late in the day. Even if you arenโ€™t a morning person, we are happy to see you bright and early to get you under way and follow your progress through treatment ๐Ÿ˜€

TMS FAQ: What kind of time commitment does TMS involve?

Your first appointment is a consult with one of the physicians typically lasting 45-60 minutes.

Your first treatment session lasts about 45 minutes. The physician will map out the area of your brain and determine the amount of energy for your treatment.

Subsequent appointments occur Monday-Friday for 30 minutes each over the course of 4-6 weeks.

Every two weeks, the physician will see you and perform a re-mapping to ensure we are on target with your treatment parameters.

TMS FAQ: Does insurance cover TMS?

Yes, most major insurances do cover TMS. Their requirements for number of treatment trials needed first may vary by company.

We are working to get credentialed so we can can be โ€œin networkโ€ with most of our major local carriers. This process can take up to several months, but we will continue to update as we get set up with companies.

Some folks have been able to get treatments covered with js before we are finished with credentials are the only provider of this service in our area. Speak with your carrier to see if this is an option.

We are also flexible with payment plans for those who wish to self-pay.

TMS FAQ: What are the side effects of TMS? Are there people who canโ€™t get TMS?

TMS is a safe and well-tolerated procedure. Localized scalp pain and tenderness may occur, though we adjust your treatment settings to minimize discomfort.

There is a very small risk of seizure with TMS that tends to occur only in those with certain underlying medical conditions or other special circumstances.

Those who definitely cannot have TMS include: those with implanted metal in their skull or brain, those with certain implanted medical devices, people with tattoos on the head/neck, and those with cochlear implants.

TMS FAQ: What does TMS treat?

TMS has FDA clearance for major depressive disorder after failure to respond to a trial of one antidepressant. Oftentimes insurance will require more medical trials before TMS is covered.

TMS also has FDA clearance for smoking cessation and obsessive compulsive disorder. Stay tuned for these disorders being treated in our clinic in the future!

Meet our technician! Jordan is the most important part of our clinic, running the treatments, helping with our motor threshold determinations, and running day to day operations.

Jordan received his bachelor of science in biology from UND and worked as a pharmacy technician prior to joining our team. He enjoys computer games, auto racing, hockey, and spending time at the lake.
