We love going to the Lakewood Farmer's Markets. I personally love grabbing fresh fruit and hummus while the kids eye the carnivorous plants.

Eating fresh fruit and vegetables is one of the best ways to protect your heart, boost your immune system, and even lower your risk of chronic diseases.

Research continues to show that diets rich in colorful produce help reduce inflammation and improve overall health.

And the best part? Shopping local means you're getting fruits and vegetables picked at their peak — and you're supporting local farmers at the same time.

Just 7,000 steps a day can make a big difference!
A 2023 study in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that people who walked at least 7,000 steps daily had a 50-70% lower risk of early death compared to those with fewer steps.
You don’t need to hit 10,000 - small, consistent movement matters!

I love walking my dog at Chambers Bay. I love seeing all the people enjoying one of the best views in the PNW while getting their steps in. The park more than makes up for the fact that my Golden Retriever has to sniff every inch of the trail.

But for as annoying as my dog can sometimes be, he brings me companionship and more:

A major meta-analysis published in 2019 in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes (found next to US Weekly and People in most doctors' offices) found that dog owners had a 24% lower risk of death from any cause compared to non-dog owners.
Even more impressive: among people with a history of heart attack or stroke, dog ownership was associated with a 31% lower risk of death!

Here's how dogs may boost your health:
- Encourage daily exercise and outdoor activity
- Reduce feelings of loneliness and depression
- Lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- Increase opportunities for social connection

A groundbreaking Australian study (The Journal of Gerontology, 2023) found that older adults who engaged in regular strength training significantly improved their muscle mass, bone density, and balance - and even reduced their risk of falls by 30%.
Participants aged 65 and older who trained just twice a week saw major improvements in strength and independence, compared to those who remained sedentary.
Strength training isn't just for athletes — it’s one of the best ways to stay healthy, mobile, and confident at any age! 💪

Memorial Day is more than just a holiday for our clinic - it’s personal.
As a team of veterans, we often think about the friends and teammates we served with who gave everything for our country.

Today, we remember them - their bravery, their laughter, their sacrifice.
We are grateful for their service, and we carry their memory with us every day.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day.

Like many of you, I’ve seen how chronic pain can wear people down—physically, emotionally, and mentally. Over the years, I’ve had patients tell me they felt stuck between taking medications they didn’t want and just “living with it.” I wanted more tools to offer.

So, I completed a course in medical acupuncture—diving into the science, the tradition, and most importantly, the results. What I’ve found is that acupuncture can be a powerful, evidence-backed option for many conditions.

It’s not magic, and it’s not a cure-all—but in the right situations, it can make a real difference. And for many, it’s a relief to have something beyond prescriptions or surgery.

I offer acupuncture as part of our care options—free for members but also available to non-members.

If you're curious about how it might help, let’s talk. You’ve got more options than you think.

You know that feeling—when something’s just off with your kid.

Not sick enough for the ER, but not well enough to ignore. Maybe it’s the fever that’s not going down. The limp that wasn’t there yesterday. The strange cough, or a gut feeling you can’t shake.

So you call the clinic. Straight to voicemail. You try again. Then again.

Finally, someone answers—but the schedule’s full. “The next available appointment is next week.”

You hang up, frustrated. You don’t want to overreact… but you also don’t want to wait. So you Google. You crowdsource. You wonder if you’re missing something serious. You think about urgent care—but you know they won’t know your child, and you might sit there for hours just to get a five-minute check.

This is why we started Dunn Family Medicine.

Our members get:
- Direct access to their doctor, including messaging through our secure app
- Same-day or next-day visits
- A doctor who knows your family and your child’s history

☕ Is Your Morning Coffee Doing More Than Just Waking You Up?

Good news, coffee lovers: research says yes.

A major review published in the British Medical Journal in 2017 analyzed over 200 studies and found that moderate coffee consumption—about 3 to 4 cups per day—was associated with reduced risk of heart disease, certain cancers, liver conditions, and even all-cause mortality. That’s right—your morning brew might actually help you live longer.

The study also noted benefits for brain health, including a lower risk of Parkinson’s and depression. And the liver? Coffee seems to love it—reduced risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer were among the most consistent findings.

So go ahead, sip with confidence.☕💪

To all the moms out there juggling snacks, schedules, and sanity—today is for you. Whether you're chasing toddlers, teenagers, or just your own peace and quiet, we salute you.

We know “me time” often means locking yourself in the bathroom for five minutes of silence—and we support that. You deserve care, appreciation, and maybe even a nap.

From all of us at Dunn Family Medicine: thanks for keeping your families (and let’s be honest, the entire world) running.

Happy Mother’s Day!
