Here we are at the end of our chakra exploration and the end of 2021. From the root to the crown, the past seven weeks have been an exploration of the chakras. This Wednesday join me at 8pm as we focus on the crown chakra whose Sanskrit name is Sahasrara, meaning thousandfold.

Associated with the element of thought, this energy center controls your connection to spirit, wisdom, unity, and self-knowledge. The color violet is associated with crown chakra and its natural element is thought.

Don’t step off the deep end of the mat yet thinking it’s a little on the woo-hoo side. See what you might learn and take what works for you. This week, we join all seven chakras from the root to the crown and celebrate with a short breathing exercise and meditation.

This is the last class for 2021. As we move into the New Year, Saturday brings us to a 90-minute Self-Care 1st Saturday workshop beginning at 3:30pm. This workshop requires a reservation (brokenwing.yoga@gmail.com) by 10 am Saturday, 1.1.22.

Take a big breath…exhale and carve out a bit of time for yourself this week. This Wednesday evening, we explore the sixth chakra commonly dubbed the 3rd eye – Ajna chakra. The third-eye chakra is associated with higher knowledge, intuition, and what you might think of as your sixth sense. Indigo represents the color of this chakra. It’s believed when the 3rd eye chakra is in balance, you can tune in and trust your intuition. Wear a little blue and meet me on the mat for the chakra #5.

Also known as Vishudda, is in the throat and extends from the shoulders to the ears. Its element is sound and the color light blue.

The 5th chakra in our seven-chakra energy system holds our authentic expression, communication, and uniqueness. It’s the bridge between our intellect and our emotions.

If you’re new to yoga or little rusty Wednesday evenings are a series of gentle poses. Friday’s at 6:30 is a wind down to the weekend with a restful restorative practice.

While you might assume the heart chakra would be red, the fourth chakra’s color is green. Assumptions as they are, the heart chakra is not located above the heart, but rather in the center of the chest.

The Sanskrit word for the heart chakra is Anahata, which means unstruck or unhurt. Physical exercises for the heart chakra focus on opening the chest, expanding and deepening the breath and stimulating the arms. We explore this fourth chakra on Wednesday at 8 PM, as we practice gentle yoga and focus on asanas that honor the heart and opens the chest.

Air is the element associated with the heart, a symbol of both breath and life. Air is also a symbol of movement, as our lungs move air in and out of our bodies. Join me as we focus on the depth of our breath and learn and gain a few calming breathing exercises.

And don’t forget Friday evenings at 6:30 where we practice our restorative poses. Interested in restorative? Bring a blanket, and a rolled towel to this session to allow your body to be supported as we spend a little longer in each asana. Wednesday Night Chakra Exploration. Join me this week as we explore the 3rd Chakra – The Solar Plexus Chakra. Also referred to as the Manipura in Sanskrit. This is the Chakra of our energy center of motivation. As we move into the winter months, motivation is a good thing. Let’s continue to move and not hunker down too soon into hibernation mode.

Manipura Chakra is kind of what gets your motor going in the morning, and we can also think of this as the most beautiful place, where powerful decisions are made. Our 3rd Chakra is assigned to yellow, and its element is fire. Choose to arrive at 8pm this Wednesday and follow us as we make our way through each of the seven Chakras.

Saturday brings us to the First Saturday Self-Care Workshop series beginning at 3:30. 90-minutes of discovery, gentle yoga and taking your time to get a little more comfortable in a class setting.

~Post Thanksgiving is a great time to reset and restore. Friday evenings at 6:30 PM we stay low to the mat and allow the body to rejuvenate and find some ease in the body.

~ First Saturday Self-care workshop offers a 90-minute gentle practice, more time getting in and understanding the pose with an extended savasana. First Saturday workshops are good for all levels, new yoga practitioners, those returning to yoga after a long break and anyone who wants a little more confidence in their practice. How do you get centered? You know, when life gets a little rocky, the week a little on the shaky side and you just need a place of calm. For me, it can be the woods, a forest where I can take a long walk and a few minutes on my mat.
In yoga we can practice centering with the first chakra – the root chakra. On a psychological level, the root chakra is associated with the survival instinct and the will to live. Yup….this might sound a bit on the woo-hoo side. But hang on. The first chakra is the foundation of the entire chakra system. It is the ground that supports your practice. Without a solid foundation your temple – in other words your body won’t be strong. Without an anchor, you have no stability.

Your body is the vehicle in which you take the journey. You only get one body per lifetime, so its kind of important to invest some time caring for it.

Join me this week as we begin folding the 7 chakras into our practice. With only seven more weeks of 2021, each week we will blend sessions with poses benefitting each chakra. Nighty night...I wish it was that easy. My first name should be Insomnia. I think its kind of a pretty name. But darn I've never been a great sleeper. How about you? If you’re anything like me, the first few yoga classes you went to were confusing and had minimal life-changing impact.

Many beginners are unsure of what to think of their first class. Maybe even laughing at others, themselves, or the instructor for what they’re doing or saying. I had my own nervous laughs that stemmed from my own insecurity of not knowing what to do as the rest of the class flowed right along.

In my own practice, I learn something new every time. Sometimes it’s a different way to enter a pose, other times it’s just using my breath to set the pace. Every time I practice, it’s with a beginner’s mind. There is no complete mastering of yoga – that’s why its called a practice.

This week is full of “practice” options.
~ Wednesday 8pm. Gentle yoga
~ Friday 6:30pm. Restorative yoga
~ Saturday 2pm. Self-care Saturday, 2pm (90-minutes)
~ Sunday 3:30pm. Yoga food drive. Nonperishables gets you in the door. No cost – just bring some goodies to help fill the community’s food needs this season. No mat-no worries. We have plenty of props and mats.

The next few weeks are full of new events. Next Friday, October 29th is Buy 1 Get One...BOGO. Or just refer to it as bring a friend night. Call it what you want, but this yoga session is all about fun. 60-minutes of candlelit yoga with Halloweenish tunes and some cider and donuts post class. The fun begins at 6:30.

We're having a food drive! All donations will benefit Metro Helping Hands. Non-perishables and personal care items will get you in the door. Beginning November 1st - 7th, sessions of Martial Arts and Yoga will accept your non-perishables for class entrance.

Yoga for non-perishables, 3:30pm on Sunday, November 7th. Bring some friends and family and a bag of non-perishables! No worries about yoga gear. Wear something comfortable, we have plenty of mats. This a great team building activity, so bring your co-workers. How special is it that the full moon of October - Hunters Moon falls on Wednesday night? Let's celebrate around this Sanguine Moon with gentle moon salutations. Yoga gives us plenty of benefits. Ahh...but moon salutations offers stretches and relaxation of the spine, pelvic area, hips, knees, ankles and the abdominal muscles.

The root chakra is opened with these slow gentle poses and that chakra can improve circulation and a sense of well-being. I want a little of that!

When we practice moon salutations at night, one of its most important advantages is that it proves to be great relaxer and sleep inducer. Who wants more of that? Me too! People suffering from insomnia in particular can reap the benefits of Chandra Namaskara, as it removes the stress and soothes the mind and body for a long night of peace and rest.
