After losing her mother to heart disease at 53, Sarah has made health and fitness a top priority.

She quit smoking, lost weight and improved her cholesterol and blood pressure. She became so interested in nutrition that she began studying it formally and hopes to get a degree in it.

"I wanted to do it for my own benefit, but also so I could use my training to help others someday," she said.

She also started working with a personal trainer to work on her strength and mobility. Her favorite activity is hiking, especially in the Arkansas mountains.

"I want to see my friends and families grow up and see their children grow up," she said. "I want to do and see as much as I can on this beautiful earth for as long as I can. I know all too well that I only have one life, and I want to take care of it."

Mike’s mom had a stroke when he was 6 months old. Megan was 7 when her mom had one. Years later, Mike and Megan would meet. Brought together by their shared history as caregivers, a friendship blossomed. Then a romance. They began leaning on and supporting each other as they continued to care for their moms.

Now they're engaged. Soon, each will call the other's mom "Mom."

They're passionate about sharing the message that both stroke survivors and caregivers can benefit from connecting with people in their same age group.

It's helped their mothers, and it's helped them, too. The support Mike and Megan found in each other has given them strength. "We know it's only going to get more challenging as the years go by," Mike said, "but we do it together now, as a team."

When Lynn’s heart stopped while bringing in groceries, her husband, Kent, called 911 and performed CPR. "Right there as you walk in the front door right on the carpet, Lynn was dead." Nearly four years later, it's still tough for him to talk about.

Surviving a cardiac arrest and witnessing a partner have one is a traumatic experience for both people, but their paths toward mental and physical recovery may differ. Read what experts say about healing both survivor and caregiver: http://spr.ly/6188wXjdj
