is a fairly common, yet potentially dangerous bacterial infection which can cause significant discomfort and even lead to severe complications if left untreated.

Bumblefoot (aka pododermatitis) is typically caused by an injury that becomes contaminated with bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, E-coli, or Pseudomonas. This infection often manifests as a painful welt or abscess on the skin and can lead to swelling, soreness, and limping in the affected chicken.

Treatment should include first soaking the affected chicken in a warm Epsom salt bath for 10–20 minutes to potentially soften things up before cleaning the wound, applying appropriate medications like triple antibiotic ointment, and dressing the wound in vet-wrap to protect it from further contamination.

After soaking, gently clean off the injured foot and using fine-tipped tweezers, gently remove any plugs found in the center of the bumble. If the plugs are not soft enough to remove, you may need to soak the foot a little longer. Make sure you get the entire plug if possible.

Finally, gently put some triple-antibiotic ointment on the wound. FYI, the plugs typically leave a hole, so you’ll need to keep this clean until the skin can heal. Cover the bumble with a sterile gauze pad and gently wrap the foot with vet-wrap (self-adhesive wrap).

Depending on the cleanliness of the wrap (and what type of ground covering you have), it should ideally be changed every day or two until it has completely healed.

DID YOU KNOW that Fenbendazole 20% AquaSol is the *Most* effective treatment for backyard poultry—and has NO egg withdrawal period?😱

More often than not, when we see foamy and/or greasy yellow droppings, it means an internal infection of some kind; more often than not, worms (even though you may not physically see any in the droppings).

We recommend Fenbendazole 20% AquaSol, as it does not have an egg withdrawal period. Many people use the “for Goats” version (Fenbendazole 10% liquid or paste), which is more commonly available – however, it not only has a 17 day egg withdrawal period, but is not anywhere near as effective.

The liquid doesn’t actually fully dissolve in water, so they don’t actually get a large enough dose, and the paste doesn’t have the medication spread equally throughout.

When treating, ensure that the ONLY water available to them contains the medication. It should be given for 5 consecutive days before switching back to unmedicated water.

If any more worms are seen, it’s recommended that a second treatment be administered, usually 10–14 days after the first treatment, in order to kill off any remaining worms that may have hatched after the initial treatment.
