We now know that evidence-aligned reading instruction benefits ALL students - this includes students who have dyslexia.

We’ve got to do more with getting these practices into every single public school. Parents call your legislators and senators. Our kids deserve better!

📝 Hey friends! Today, I want to shed light on the incredible philosophy behind Special Education. It's not just about fitting a child into the existing system; it's about something far more empowering and meaningful: tailoring the system to meet a child's unique needs. 🎯

🔍 We live in a beautifully diverse world, where each individual possesses their own set of talents, abilities, and challenges. Special Education recognizes and celebrates this diversity by embracing an individualized approach to learning. 💪

📚 Instead of trying to mold a child into an existing educational framework, Special Education professionals go above and beyond to create an inclusive environment where each child's strengths and weaknesses are understood, acknowledged, and accommodated. 🤝

✨ This tailored approach is a game-changer, allowing children with varying abilities to thrive in their educational journey. It's about unlocking their full potential, building self-confidence, and fostering a love for learning. 💖

🌈 Whether a child has a learning disability, neurodivergence, or other exceptionalities, Special Education recognizes that a "one-size-fits-all" approach simply won't cut it. It seeks to provide individualized support, accommodations, and specialized teaching methods to help every child shine brightly. ⭐

🙌 Let's appreciate the dedicated teachers, therapists, and support staff who champion this cause. They pour their hearts and souls into creating a nurturing and inclusive environment, ensuring that no child is left behind. 🌟

💭 So, the next time you come across a child in a Special Education program, remember that it's not just about fitting them into the system. It's about tailoring the system to meet their unique needs and giving them the wings to soar. 🦋

Share this post to spread the word about the importance of tailoring the education system to meet each child's unique needs. Let's ensure that every child receives the support they deserve. 📢

Myth Monday---and it's a biggie!!

If you are new to the Science of Reading ( SOR) or just in the process of unlearning years of outdated thinking towards how we teach or learn how to read this one is a major eye opener. 👀

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), refer, to a learning disability in part as "imperfect ability...to think" which not only does not apply to dyslexia but can be harmful to those who are dyslexic. Dyslexics have a reading impairment, not a thinking impairment.

According to Shaywitz, "Dyslexia is specific; learning disabilities are general.
How so??

-Dyslexia is very specific and scientifically validated; scientists know its prevalence, where it originates in the brain, symptoms, and effective, evidence-based interventions.

-Learning disabilities is a general term referring to a "range of difficulties which have not yet been delineated or scientifically validated."
--There are many different causes of learning disabilities, along with many different symptoms, and there are different interventions needed depending on the specific symptom.

It is not a secret that most school districts, or states identify Dyslexia as a stand along area for special education, however as parents and advocates we can not allow our schools to ignore, fail to recognize, or deny the reality or diagnosis of dyslexia. This diagnosis should "clear the fog" to reveal what is already present.

Tune in for more myths coming soon!
