On June 17th, SAMHSA released a statement about the 988 press 3 option closing starting on July 17th. Following this, many members of the community spoke out with concerns about how this change would impact the LGBTQIA+ community. Our team took time to listen to our staff, partners, community members and help seekers this past week to best address questions and concerns.
We at Response Crisis Center recognize the deeply personal reactions to this change, and how it particularly impacts marginalized communities that benefit from specialized services. We remain dedicated to providing a safe, supportive, and culturally responsive space for all who reach our services. While we want to reaffirm this ongoing commitment to supporting diverse populations including the LGBTQIA+ community, we recognize the importance of not minimizing the loss of this and other resources alongside the stressors this climate is adding to already vulnerable populations. Please know that during this critical time, as always, your life matters to us, your voice matters, and we are here for you.
We also recognize the confusion and have seen misinformation shared during this time related to the state of 988 as a network. Ensuring we share accurate information is the responsibility of all. 988 is not shutting down. The 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline is still operating 24/7. Trained, culturally competent counselors are here to support anyone in crisis, including LGBTQIA+ callers, chatters, and texters. The mission to support all help seekers remains in the wake of the disheartening change to the press 3 subnetwork.
As we navigate change together, we will continue to provide unconditional acceptance, compassion, and respect to our community.
