The transition into deep winter can be tough. If you’ve been feeling low energy, a little gloomy, or just generally “off” since the clocks changed, you’re experiencing what many call the winter blues, or clinically, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It’s a real, often mild, form of depression linked to reduced exposure to sunlight.

Here are a few powerful, practical strategies to help lift your spirits and sustain your well-being through the chillier months.

Remember, it’s okay to have off days, but if your symptoms are severe, persistent, or interfering with your daily life, please reach out to a healthcare professional here at Twelve-Two Counseling for support.

Embrace the Shift: Prioritizing Your Mental Health as Seasons Change ☀️

As the days get shorter and the weather shifts, it’s completely normal to feel a change in your mood and energy. This is sometimes called the “Winter Blues” or, more seriously, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Remember, you don’t have to just “tough it out.” Be proactive and compassionate with yourself! Here are four simple, powerful steps to support your mental health during the seasonal transition:

1. Maximize Your Light Exposure

2. Guard Your Routine (Sleep, Exercise, & Social)

3. Nourish Your Body & Mind

4. Be Patient and Seek Support

Depression is more than just feeling sad; it’s a serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think, and how you act. It’s often invisible, which is why understanding its symptoms is so crucial. If you or someone you know is struggling, recognizing these signs is the first step towards getting help.

You Are Not Alone. Depression is treatable, and recovery is possible. If you recognize these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, please reach out to a healthcare professional, a mental health expert, or a trusted friend or family member.

Let’s break the stigma and encourage open conversations about mental health this October and beyond.

10/11/2025

Today is Mental Health Awareness Day. Let this be your reminder: It’s okay not to be okay.

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Take a moment to check in with yourself, and remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

You are not alone. Let’s keep the conversation going and break the stigma.

As we lean towards the end of August let’s take some time to celebrate National Wellness Month! It’s a perfect reminder to prioritize yourself and your well-being. Wellness is so much more than just physical health; it’s a holistic approach to taking care of your mind, body, and spirit.

Moving forward, let’s focus on small, intentional changes that can make a big difference. Think about:
* Physical Wellness: Movement is key! Whether it’s a walk in the park, a new yoga class, or a simple stretching routine, find a way to get your body moving that you genuinely enjoy.
* Mental Wellness: Our brains need a break. Try a digital detox, practice mindfulness or meditation, or spend a few minutes journaling to process your thoughts and feelings.
* Emotional Wellness: Connect with others and with yourself. Nurture your relationships, set healthy boundaries, and allow yourself to feel and process your emotions without judgment.
* Financial Wellness: While it may not seem obvious, financial stress can have a huge impact on your overall well-being. Take a small step this month to organize your finances or create a budget that works for you.
* Social Wellness: Build your support network. Make time to connect with friends and family, or find a community group that shares your interests.

Wellness is a journey, not a destination. It’s about progress, not perfection. This month, what’s one small step you’ll take to invest in yourself?
