Varicose and spider veins develop when the veins in your legs have difficulty moving blood back toward the heart. Healthy veins contain small valves that open and close to keep blood flowing upward. Over time, these valves can weaken or stop working properly, allowing blood to pool inside the vein. The added pressure can cause veins to stretch, twist, or become visible near the surface of the skin.
Several factors can contribute to this process, including genetics, pregnancy, hormonal changes, long periods of standing or sitting, and aging. Hormonal shifts can relax vein walls, pregnancy increases pressure on leg veins, and gravity makes circulation work harder throughout the day. While some vein changes are visible, others affect how your legs feel—causing heaviness, aching, or fatigue—long before they’re obvious. That’s why vein health isn’t just cosmetic; it’s about circulation, comfort, and quality of life.
