Congratulations to our LMSA member, Samantha, who matched in Family Medicine at Zucker SOM-Northwell Phelps Hosp-NY!

A message from Samantha:
"LMSA allowed me to write policy, utilize artwork as advocacy, mentor premedical students, and most importantly, learn about disparities that impact the health of Latino communities. A highlight of my residency program is that I can continue serving these communities, as our patient population is predominantly Latino. As a member of LMSA, I plan to provide equitable healthcare in my next chapter of life to uphold this organization’s vision."

We wish you all the best as you continue on this journey! 🩺🏥⚕️

Welcome to one of our Co-Presidents, Abdiel Cabral-Hernandez!

“Hello there! I am Abdiel Cabral-Hernandez!

I use he/him pronouns.

I am the Co-President.

I take my Café Bustelo con leche y azúcar.

When I'm not studying, I like to go out and be with friends and family or stay home and watch TV or blast music.

In the future, personally, I always envisioned being the kind of doctor that is knowledgeable and accessible to everyone! I want to be the one where people can go to me for an emergency or for medical advice. That’s why I am working to become an Emergency Medicine Physician. It’s a specialty with hands on medical care and a broad range of medical knowledge that will give me the confidence to help my family and community.”

LMSA and SNMA have been working with Syracuse University on a mentoring program between Upstate medical students and pre-medical students at SU. This mentorship program would be an extension-of Orange to Upstate, a mentoring program that already exists between the two schools.

This mentorship is intended to provide students (mentors and mentees alike) an opportunity to seek guidance from someone that they can identify with, someone that may come from similar backgrounds as them. If this is something you are interested in please fill out the form in our bio! Deadline is 10/3 to sign up and you must be available for the "kick off" event that's being held virtually on 10/12 at 5 pm!

Every year, September 15th begins National Hispanic Heritage Month where we celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of those from Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America! It commemorates the Independence Day for the countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The Independence Day for Mexico (9/16), Chile (9/18), and Puerto Rico (9/23) follow soon after!

Hispanic Heritage Month lasts for a month until October 15th. It began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and expanded to a month in 1988. Throughout the month, LMSA will host events to celebrate and honor nuestra cultura! 🪅

Keep an eye out for the LMSA Hispanic Heritage Month events to follow!
