New Thoughts on the Tree of Life:
The tree of life has several meanings including many biblical and spiritual interpretations, but I usually think of it simply as a symbol of human life with deep roots and branches that rise up tall and spread out wide. These majestic trees in Southern California got me thinking that they are actually a more realistic representation of life’s journey. The branches are twisted and knotted, taking a downturn before heading back up, going this way and then that way, curving and looping around whatever must have gotten in their way. They are bumpy and beautiful, complex and awe inspiring. I am not sure what these trees are called or why they grow like this, but they intrigued me and gave me another way to think of the “tree of life”.

I am sure nobody else was thinking what I was thinking when seeing the shots of Taylor Swift at the Superbowl. I was thinking about Red Dye #3, a carcinogenic that has been banned from cosmetics in the US since 1990. Lucky for Taylor and everyone else that wears lipstick.

But the problem is that FD&C Red 3 has NOT been banned in food in the United States (except in California) even though the EU, Japan, China, Australia, and New Zealand have banned it since 1994. To avoid ingesting FD&C Red 3, you need to read labels! Surprisingly, this toxic additive is not only in many candies, gummies, pastries and cake but also in some “healthy foods” like yogurts, sports drinks, cereals, granola bars, and baby food. Happy to report that M&Ms which are my personal favorite and Skittles have removed this additive.

The take home message for this Valentine’s Day is:
❤️Read labels and avoid eating food with FD&C Red 3
❤️Check out the article for more info on the toxic effects of RED Dye #3. Link in bio
❤️Support organizations like Center for Science in the Public Interest that lobbies for toxins to be banned from our food supply.
💋Go ahead and wear your red lipstick!
❤️Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️

❤️You may be surprised to learn that heart disease is the #1 killer of women and that women are 10 times more likely to die from atherosclerotic disease than from breast cancer! The good news is that heart disease is preventable by eating healthy, managing stress, sleeping well and exercising regularly - all the pillars of healthy living. Is your blood pressure a little high, cholesterol climbing up, blood sugar creeping up? Are you carrying extra weight, stressed out, not sleeping well or eating too much of what you know you shouldn’t be? February is the perfect month to commit to making lifestyle changes for heart health. And if you are having trouble getting started or staying on track, let’s have a conversation how health coaching is the best thing for your heart. ❤️ Check out my website in bio.

Thank you all for the well wishes and helpful suggestions. I am happy to report that I am doing much better and working every day on healing. Slowing down is challenging for me and it certainly helps me appreciate how hard behavior change is regardless of what you are working on. My morning meditation and daily mantra sets my intention each day. I am so grateful for all the wonderful healers. Rena at Northshore Chinese Medicine, my yoga instructor , my PTs , and Dr. Yoss

Even though I got my check up from this young doc / policeman, unfortunately I have started off the year benched on the sideline. First, I got the tot rot cold from the toddlers ( if you haven’t experienced it, it is brutal!) and then had an acute disc herniation! The pain was excruciating and was finally relieved by an epidural. So, I am trying to take my own health coaching advice and resetting my goals. Meditation, gentle yoga, acupuncture, PT, anti-inflammatory diet with increased protein and positive energy. S**t happens to all of us, even health coaches. I am hoping that practicing healthy living habits will aid my recovery. Welcoming any advice or suggestions.

Out of all the pictures from our family Thanksgiving gathering, I chose these for my Healthy Selfies this week. (certainly wasn’t posting the apple pie, birthday cake, pumpkin pie and stuffing!) Quincy is an older dog and is no longer up to playing fetch but he is so happy to get snuggled. It fascinates me how the children gravitate to the dog and instantly calm down when they pet him, hug him and basically lay on top of him. He too, is so relaxed when they are petting him. This is OXYTOCIN at work! The “love hormone” that is released from the pituitary gland and is linked to positive emotional states like happiness, relaxation, and pleasure. It not only makes you feel good, but has other benefits as well, like lowering blood pressure, increasing pain threshold, reducing inflammation and boosting immunity. So how can you get more OXYTOCIN besides spending time with your pet? Studies show that listening to music, yoga, getting a massage, spending time with friends, expressing love, meditating, gentle touch and hugs are all ways to boost your oxytocin levels. Want to share a picture of yourself with your pet? It will boost your “O” hormone and make us all feel good.
