When people are denied the legal capacity to make their own decisions, they lose more than just equal recognition under the law—they also lose the ability to fully exercise and protect their human rights. In some cases, guardians or legal representatives assigned to support individuals with disabilities may not act in their best interests. Worse still, some may misuse their authority, resulting in serious violations of the very rights they were entrusted to uphold.

Sometimes, parents disagree with the school district about their child and special education. When you disagree or feel that the school is not meeting its legal obligations, there are several ways for parents to resolve these disagreements.
It is usually best for everyone involved to work out differences at the lowest possible level with the least amount of conflict. This presentation has information about:

This program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) provides parent training and information (PTI) services to the North Florida Region from Escambia to Brevard County (Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Calhoun, Gulf, Bay, Washington, Jackson, Liberty, Holmes, Franklin, Wakulla, Gadsden, Leon, Jefferson, Taylor, Madison, Hamilton, Dixie, Suwannee, Lafayette, Gilchrist, Columbia, Baker, Levy, Alachua, Union, Bradford, Nassau, Duval, St. John’s, Clay, Putnam, Flagler, Marion, Seminole, Volusia, & Brevard). These PTI services help to ensure that parents of children with the full range of disabilities have the training and information they need to prepare their children for not only school but to be able to lead productive, independent lives to the fullest extent possible.
