The 22nd of May is the International Day of Biodiversity. One of our main missions as an organization is to preserve the biodiversity of Haralson County through cleanups, preservation efforts, and anti-pollution efforts. Today, we'd like to spotlight a species near and dear to the people of Haralson - America's one and only native marsupial, the opossum!
More closely related to kangaroos and koalas than rats or raccoons, they too have pouches on their bellies to carry their young. They're docile creatures with poor eyesight, and far more bark than they have bite. Opossums very rarely carry rabies, with the hissing and spittle they often exhibit being a defense mechanism to scare off predators rather than any form of disease.
