Blood pressure is affected by numerous factors. These include:
- Weight: Being overweight places you at a higher risk of developing high blood pressure.
- Diet: Eating a diet that's high in sodium can raise your blood pressure.
- Alcohol and/or caffeine consumption: Alcohol and caffeine temporarily narrow your blood vessels and raise your blood pressure. However, with frequent and excessive consumption, the increase can become chronic.
- Smoking: It can not only increase your chances of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases but also raise your blood pressure.
- Little to no Exercise - Exercising regularly helps your heart and blood vessels, in turn, lowering your blood pressure.
- Poor Sleep habits
- Age: Your risk for developing high blood pressure increases as you age.
- Family history
- Race/Ethnicity: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Blacks develop high blood pressure at a higher rate and at an earlier age than any other group.
- Stress
- Other health issues, such as diabetes
