Want your products to sell?
💥 STOP SELLING THEM! 💥

It sounds ridiculous 🤔 but hear me out …

Rather than overwhelming your potential customers 😓 with every little detail about the product or service you provide, sell them on the outcome it will achieve. 📈

This way, you don’t have to convince them of anything at all regarding your physical product. You appeal to their pre-existing needs and desires. 💭

👉 Take a vacuum cleaner.
😑 Rather than boring and overwhelming the consumer with a list of the tech specs and suction power of your vacuum
✨ Sell them on the outcome of a clean, clutter free living space and the life of convenience and peace they dream of.

All you have to do to be successful at outcome selling is:
✅ Identify your customer
✅ Understand their needs
✅ Connect the dots
✅ Present the outcome story

Ready, set, sell!
(Just not the vacuum cleaner.)

🗣 HIRE A FREELANCER! 🗣

💥 Looking for a new or refreshed website?
🙋‍♀️ I can build that for you!
💥Need more social media content than your calendar can handle?
🙋‍♀️ I can make that for you!
💥 Need clean, polished, engaging, conversion driving copy?
🙋‍♀️ I can write that for you!

Now my point:
😅 Freelancing is hard.
😥 Freelancing is scary.
😓 Freelancing is uncertain.

But freelancers work harder than anyone on the planet. Our live(lihood)s depend on it. 💪

We're constantly looking for the next project.
Constantly trying to fill a pipeline and earn a consistent income to support ourselves and our families with no guarantees to come in return for our perpetual willingness to try; and try really damn hard.

✅ If you have a job you need done
✅ Or a project you need managed
✅ Or a task you need checked
✅ Or time you need saved

ask around and see if you can't find a hardworking person with a great set of skills and some applicable experience to delegate it to.

You'll be grateful for the help.
We'll be grateful for the work.

And if they do a good job, tell people.
👉 Your mom.
👉 Your yoga teacher.
👉 Your hairstylist.
👉 Your cat.
👉 Everyone.

THE AMBIGUITY EFFECT 🤨

The Ambiguity Effect is a 🧠 cognitive bias that describes how we avoid options we consider to be missing information 🙅🏽‍♀️ To avoid uncertain outcomes, we choose the option we know the most about; the most predictable one 👆

This effect touches most everything we do.
👩🏽‍🎓 Classes we take
🥇 Competitions we enter
🎬 Movies we watch
💼 Professions we choose

In many cases, we will choose poor options over ambiguity. We’ll select a course taught by a professor with average ratings over a course taught by a professor with none because they’re new to the school.

The Ambiguity Effect prevents us from giving two viable options equal consideration. ⚖️

Avoid this bias! Fight your own impulses. Take time to make decisions. You probably don’t know as much as you think you do about the “obvious” choice.

Negate ambiguity aversion in your own business 👩🏽‍💼
✅ Provide ample information
✅ Make sure to include shipping and return policies on your website
✅ Provide product reviews
✅ Make it easy for customers to ask questions, and try to answer them before they have to

Purchasing decisions, like any other, are risks.
Though I implore you to fight ambiguity aversion in your own decisions, also be aware that most are oblivious and will gravitate toward the option they think they know the most about.

Be that option 👍🏼

Back in the '20s, economists predicted with the growth of technology that leisure time would indicate wealth and success 💰 Busyness, instead, became the signal.
Technology takes tasks off our hands so we can add more, and more. And more. 📈

When COVID hit, however, life slowed down. 😅
The effect that had on a culture where “busy” determines value hit our sense of importance. HARD.

Now, there are indicators that people don’t want to return to the old system.

It feels great to do nothing sometimes. 🥳

The end of the pandemic, for many, is the return of
🙅🏽‍♀️ Anxiety
🙅🏽‍♀️ Constant “keeping up"
🙅🏽‍♀️ Busyness.

It may be a status symbol, but at what cost? And is it even a status symbol anymore?

Dear privileged people: Busyness is a construct. It’s used to maintain a position in hierarchy, and different economic classes are never afforded equal access to the esteem it implies. Further, research has shown that the people who lament being busy the loudest haven’t actually experienced a huge increase in working hours. Stop telling everyone how busy you are.

✋🏼 Stop rushing through interactions with other humans on the street or phone.
✋🏼 Stop rushing through reading bedtime stories to your children.
✋🏼 Stop rushing through meals at your desk between emails.
👉 Be a human being, not a human “doing.”
✋🏼 Stop telling everyone how busy you are.

Busyness is not a privilege of the wealthy.
Deceleration is.

✅ The pandemic taught us how good it feels to decelerate.
✅ To eat with our families.
✅ To read books we like.
✅ To interact with focus and intention.

Maybe you can’t change how busy you are, if you really are. But your perspective on busyness can.

Stop telling everyone how busy you are.

BEWARD OF BURNOUT

It’s much more than a feeling of overwhelm. In fact, burnout and that feeling of overwhelm eventually manifest in physical ways that leave us disregarding our own physical and mental health.

Swipe through the post to get an idea of the symptoms of burnout so you don’t find yourself chronically sick and tired of being sick and tired.

How to decide where to build your website:

There are an overwhelming number of web building platforms available, and choosing the best one for your project usually goes one of two ways:
1️⃣ You use the one you’ve heard of before, whether it’s the best choice for your project or not, because it’s the only one you’ve heard of.
2️⃣ You ask your friend who has a website what they used and use that one, too.

There are actually a number of considerations when choosing the best platform to build your site.

🛍 Are you a small business looking to sell your product or service online? Shopify is probably your best bet.
🎨 Are you an artist looking to make a visual portfolio-style site showcasing beautiful images and artistic style? Give WebFlow a shot.
💻 Would you like a lot of theme options and plugins, and have a little code familiarity? Wordpress might be your guy.

But, in general, here are a few things to look at to narrow down your decision:
► What’s your budget?
► What is the goal of the site?
► How much customization do you need, and what are you capable of doing on your own?
► East of use.
► SEO features.
► Help and support offered, including outside the site itself. YouTube University comes to the rescue more times than you might think.
► Company reputation and site security.

It’s worth learning the platform that best fits your needs instead of making your needs fit the platform you think you can figure out easiest.

For help managing this decision or with the web-building itself, send me a message! 🆘👋🏻

Reposting ♻️ because it’s the column on the 👉🏼 right that I haven’t been able to keep up with lately, with everything else going on in my wonderful life 🙃

👈🏻 Still want to produce the column on the left.

Nearly every time I make something, I hate it a couple hours later.

👆 Typically, by then, I also know exactly what I’d change to make it better.

⌛️ Typically, by then, it’s too late.

That critical eye is crawling through an image already through to the other side of the “Post” button, betrayed by an eager thumb and impatience.

I don’t always have the time to wait ⏰ but when I do, I do.

Nothing is perfect, nor will it be, nor should it be. But a little time goes a long way to realizing fully what you intend to present, the way you’d most like to present it.

📝 Better margins
🧼 A cleaner font
🥺 Less spacing inconsistencies
⫷ Less white space
⫸ More white space
✍🏼 A more powerful but subtle turn of phrase

You work hard.
Give it a rest and come back so you can be proud of it, even a couple hours later 😇

This is Kate ☀️

🎄 She’s 11 and turns 12 in December, 5 business and 2 play days in front of Christmas.

✍🏼 She wins at drawing but my handwriting is better.

🎍 Kate’s as tall as a bamboo forest, grows about as fast, all knees and elbows.

🤸🏽‍♀️ She wants to do gymnastics anyway, tumbling through the grass out back with her iPad propped up on the air conditioner so her grandparents can watch.

📚 We read our books in the car at the bus stop Monday through Friday, 6:45-7:09 a.m.

🎨 Her favorite things about herself are her hair and how she loves to help people and my favorite thing about myself is her.
