Improving your Young Dancer or Athlete’s Food Relationships, Growth and Development, & Performance

My name is Maura and I am a certified registered dietitian nutritionist, a Florida licensed dietitian, and certified in public health. I obtained two bachelor's degrees in human nutrition and dietetics at Kansas State University, as well as completing my master’s of public health in dietetics at the University of South Florida. I am dedicated to helping your child build a healthier relationship with food. As a former ballet dancer, I understand the pressure young athletes face - from body image struggles to balancing performance and nutrition. My own challenges with food and weight management inspired me to pursue a career in dietetics so I could help others find balance and confidence in their eating habits. Today, I specialize in pediatric dance and sports nutrition. Whether you are looking to support your teen’s performance goals, improve a picky eater, or learn how to help your child reach growth goals, I’m here to provide guidance that’s realistic, evidence-based, supportive, and tailored to you or your child’s unique needs.

MYTH: Dancers should avoid “simple” carbs ❌
FACT: They can actually be a powerful fueling tool when used intentionally ✔️

Simple carbohydrates digest quickly, which makes them helpful before rehearsal, during long training days, or paired with protein after class to support recovery.

The goal isn’t to eliminate foods — it’s to understand when and how they support performance. Most meals should still include fiber-rich carbs for lasting energy, but there’s absolutely room for quick-fuel options and even the occasional refined snack.

Fueling a dancer isn’t about restriction. It’s about strategy, balance, and listening to your body. 💛

Save this for your next rehearsal day and share with a dancer (or dance parent) who’s still afraid of carbs!

came through and sent me their delicious Buffalo Chicken Sauce and Buttermilk Ranch Dressing made with Avocado Oil 🥑

As a dietitian who works with dancers, I’m always trying to find a way to make a well balanced, high protein, and fibrous meal or snack that can support a dancer’s busy schedule.

This wrap has all of those components and taste amazing to see below for the recipe:

BUFFALO CHICKEN WRAPS
- 1/3 C Primal Kitchen Buffalo Sauce
- 1/3 Cup Primal Kitchen Buttermilk Ranch
- 1/2 C cheddar Chaco cheese, grated
- 12 oz (raw measurement) of Chicken Breast, cooked and shredded (or use rotisserie chicken or canned chicken *amount for recipe may vary)
- 3 small stalks of celery, diced
- 1 medium sized carrot, julienned
- 4 romaine lettuce leaves
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 4 whole grain wraps

DIRECTIONS:
-Wash and prepare your vegetables and set aside.
-Season and cook the chicken until internal temp is 165 degrees. Let the chicken rest and cool to shred.
- combined shredded chicken, celery, cheese, and sauces until mixed well.
- lay down a wrap, place the lettuce, then top with the chicken mixture, carrots, and red bell peppers. Roll up your wrap!
- eat right away or save for the week for easy to grab lunches!

Also, added an for the good little boost of fiber and a refreshing drink. Buffalo chicken + a cold (healthier for you) soda = a perfect match! ❤️

Words matter — especially to dancers. 💬🩰

So many comments about food are said without harm… but they can shape how a dancer feels about fueling, their body, and their performance.

Dancers don’t need food guilt.
They need support. They need trust in their bodies. They need fuel to do what they love.

Let’s shift the conversation from judgment ➡️ encouragement.
From body talk ➡️ performance talk.
From restriction ➡️ nourishment.

Because properly fueled dancers are stronger, more confident, and more resilient — on and off the stage.

If you’re a parent, teacher, or dancer trying to build a healthier relationship with food, you’re not alone. 🤍

Under-fueling isn’t always obvious — and it’s rarely intentional.

For dancers, it can show up as low energy, frequent injuries, mood changes, or feeling “off” in rehearsal… even when they’re training hard and trying their best.

Fueling enough isn’t about eating perfectly or having more willpower — it’s about supporting the demands of dance and growth.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not failing. You just need better support and better information 🤍

Save this for later or share it with a dancer or dance parent who might need it.
