When digging deeper to uncover why you may not be moving forward with your health goals, looking at hormone levels and how well the body detoxifies is crucial. One way the body helps maintain hormonal balance is through detoxifying actions in the liver and gut. The hormone estrogen, for example, is metabolized (broken down) in the liver and then sent to the intestines for excretion from the body.

Excess hormones, however, are not the only substances the body regularly rids itself of! Many of us are routinely exposed to toxins, like food additives, pollutants, pesticides, and more. While there are a variety of detox support tools available, like dry brushing and saunas, your body’s ability to detoxify correctly depends on many factors, including your overall level of toxin exposure and the health of your gut microbiome.

Whether the stress we encounter in our lives is physical or psychological, real or imagined, or current or anticipated, our body reacts similarly.

The stress response begins in the brain and sends messages throughout the body, many of which influence glands in our endocrine system, such as the adrenals. What happens when your mitochondria slow down?

A chemical fuel called ATP is created in the electron transport chain of mitochondria’s inner membrane. When quantities of available electrons are low, energy production slows, causing fatigue, immune system dysfunction, and inflammation.

But you can bring your mitochondrial powerhouses into balance by kicking off your shoes and sinking your toes into the dirt! Known as earthing or grounding, the practice of making direct contact with grass, stone, and sand pulls negative ions from the earth’s natural charge into the body to promote healing by neutralizing disease-promoting free radicals. The most fortifying grounding happens in seawater, wet sand, or dewy grass, where water and minerals are plentiful. If you cannot easily go barefoot where you live, grounding mats are an indoor alternative.

Grounding for 30 minutes daily may help improve mitochondrial condition and slow the aging process. Subjects in grounding studies report feeling healthier, looking younger, and having more positivity, compassion, and patience since making grounding a daily habit.

Your heartbeat is a great reminder that you have natural rhythms within. Two important rhythms for sleep and rest are circadian and ultradian rhythms. Just as your body goes through cycles while you’re sleeping, a similar process occurs when you’re awake. These intervals, called ultradian rhythms, are the body’s signals that it needs a break. Although everyone experiences these cycles consistently, what you do during these rest periods is highly bio-individual. The things that are relaxing and rejuvenating for some may be the exact opposite for others! Don't get caught up in people pleasing wack-a-mole, running around trying to please one person and disappointing another, then trying to make up and please that person. What you end up doing is betraying yourself. Often we are so focused on people pleasing that we loose ourselves and become out of touch with what we want and need internally. Do YOU and do your best with what is in your control.
