Sympathy and empathy are not the same thing. Many people mix up the two. You don't have to be in the same situation as the other person to understand their situation and pain.
It's being able to sit with them and understand that you've been through pain and know how much it hurts. Being able to understand their point of view.
Sitting with them in their hour of need. Allowing them to know that they are being heard and that they are not alone.
