Radial nerve floss ftw 🙌. If you want movement classes with the nervous system at the core, try out Move with Adell

I love a challenge that can be aided with a stack of neuro-based drills like nerve flossing, ocular motor reflexes, and breath, with traditional approaches for the muscles.

I would love to know if one of these was more helpful for you, not just for chinstand but for any backbend!

Perturbation just refers to something knocking us off balance.

As you can imagine, we have to work harder to balance if we’re being perturbed.

And when we have to work harder, it activates areas of the brain that are responsible for reflexive stability (ie the kind you don’t have to think about consciously) such as the cerebellum.

Join me for a free workshop “Your Brain on Movement” 31 May — link in my bio has all the details!

I do vestibular training (and teach it) because:

1) training my vestibular system changed how I move and feel for the better

2) training my vestibular system unlocked skills I thought I’d never be able to do

3) when we train our vestibular system within a YOGA PRACTICE, we get the nervous system benefits of the mindfulness, the breath, the safe environment, which enhances the effects of the drills 🤌

I get this question ALL THE TIME

I know, it looks like it could be painful when you see someone’s elbows doing this, and all their weight is on them.

But I hope the information in this post will assuage the urge to wince in empathetic pain — or to give a needless cue to microbend.

As always:
- if there’s pain, there’s a reason for it, but not always what you might think
- strengthening NEVER goes amiss 😉

As a mostly online teacher, I use these cues often! “Look at where your arms are” or “bring your hands to your hips to feel this”

And as someone who doesn’t love hands-on adjustments from other yoga teachers, I advocate for these types of cues in in-person classes too 😊

⭐️ TRY THIS:

A fun way to test your proprioception is to close your eyes and then put your arms out in front of you, with the hands level to each other.

Open your eyes, and see if your arms are indeed even or not. If not, bring them to level with the help of your eyes and pause to feel that.

Repeat until what “feels” level is ACTUALLY level.

This can be applied to any movement or posture! You can then teach your brain better awareness of where your body is.

Why is this important? Well injury prevention for one!! Don’t you think it could be easy to twist an ankle that isn’t where you THINK it is?

It’s also helpful if you want to nail some of the more complex moves you’re working on ☺️

So let me know: how’s your proprioception? (My left arm goes too high 😅)

This month in the Move with Adell community we are exploring the affirmation “I am worthy of love and respect “ — and not just saying it passively and moving on.

Rather we are looking deeper at our subconscious beliefs about what we truly deserve, and exploring ways to rewire our brains into identifying—all day everyday, no matter what—as people who deserve love and respect

Because when your subconscious IDENTIFIES as that person, then all of your subsequent choices and actions reflect that.

Micro bend? YES… BUT ALSO build strength and awareness in full range of motion 😁

If you’re hypermobile in ANY joint it’s helpful to be mindful of it and micro bend that joint sometimes to build strength in the muscles around the joint.

Please don’t misunderstand me: I’m not saying you should never microbend 🙅🏻‍♀️

But as I say in the video, that ALONE may not be enough to prevent knee injuries from hyperextending.

Also please 🙏 : train with *intentional activation* of your muscles into your hyperextension; I’m NOT advocating for going there passively 🫣

Share with this with your bendy friends!
