✏️ Back-to-school for parents of Autistic and ADHD kids isn’t just packing backpacks and picking pencils and planners. It’s transitions, big emotions, and sensory overload.
5 ways to make it feel easier:
1. Lower after-school demands.
Less structure + more help with “easy” tasks = fewer meltdowns. (Have boundaries, but let go of the stuff that doesn’t matter as much).
2. Use predictable routines.
Same snack, same spot, same downtime. Predictability = safety (calm) for the nervous system.
3. Allow for sensory input.
Movement, music, fidgets, stimming, deep pressure — kids regulate through their senses.
4. Expect big feelings.
Plan for connection over correction.
5. Build in more time for transitions.
Things take longer than you think (especially the first month).
