STUCK IN INDECISION? Just do SOMETHING!

Indecision can be crippling. We have all had days where we are faced with multiple paths to go down, and it seems nearly impossible to make a decision. And the more we think about what we should do next, the more stuck we get!

Research shows that procrastination causes unhappiness. Indecision leads to procrastination. This is because when we think too much before taking action, and get stuck in indecision, we may start to feel overwhelmed. When we feel this way, we often lose motivation to do anything at all, which means we do anything to avoid being reminded that we haven't made a decision. Studies have shown that the feeling of procrastination saps our feelings of happiness and purpose.

There is power in decision. It's better to make a decision than to not make one. This is because the act of making a decision puts us in a position of feeling in control. And whenever we feel in control, we feel empowered.

Any decision is the right one. No need to worry about what decision is the 'right' one. ANY decision will propel you forward into action. You can always make tweaks later.

Decide and do! So the next time you feel stuck in indecision, just decide that you will take some action. Just do it, and notice how this makes you feel!

Perspective Matters

When faced with a challenging situation, it may seem that things will never improve, and that the challenge will be there forever, or at least for a very long time.

The truth is, things are constantly in a state of change. Nothing stays the same forever. Nothing. Although it may not seem this way, particularly when you are caught up in the daily challenges of life.

Perspective is powerful. The vantage point from which you view things has a potent effect on how you feel about and handle difficult situations.

Here’s a fun exercise you can do to remind yourself that just like with past challenges, you will likely come through any current difficulties or struggles:

1: Bring to mind a challenging time you had in the past that is now completely behind you.

Really put yourself there, and ask yourself these questions:

On a scale of 1-10, how much did this challenge negatively impact my life, with 10 being the most?

How long did the difficult time last?

On a scale of 1-10, right now, in the present, how much does this past challenge negatively impact my life?

2: Now bring to mind a challenging time you are currently facing, and ask yourself:

On a scale of 1-10, how much does this challenge negatively impact my life, with 10 being the most?

On a scale of 1-10, how hopeful am I that I will get past this challenge, with 10 being most hopeful?

3: Travel ONE YEAR into the future (really put yourself there), and ask yourself:

Regarding the challenging time I faced one year ago, on a scale of 1-10, how much does this challenge negatively impact my life, with 10 being the most?

4: Now travel FIVE YEARS into the future, and ask yourself:

Regarding the challenging time I faced five years ago, on a scale of 1-10, how much does this challenge negatively impact my life, with 10 being the most?

5: Come back to the present, and repeat this question regarding your current challenge:

On a scale of 1-10, how hopeful am I that I will get past this challenge, with 10 being most hopeful?

6: Notice if there has been a shift. Are you more hopeful that you will get through your current challenge? If not, don’t fret.

Keep in mind that all things change. You move and grow through challenges continuously throughout your life.

Continue to remind yourself of past challenges that you came through that may have seemed impossible at the time. As you learn to shift your perspective in this way, you may find that you being to view challenges in a new way.

2020 has been a year of unprecedented challenges worldwide, causing a lot of uncertainty, worry and fear. As a result, many people are experiencing higher levels of stress and anxiety than usual. In times like this it may seem impossible to have a positive outlook. Negativity is coming at us from many angles, so we must be careful not to internalize it. Without monitoring our inner states, we may find ourselves in a downward spiral.

The practice of gratitude is a powerful antidote to negativity. And it's just that, a practice. When you find negativity taking over your mind, you can stop it in its tracks with the following steps:

1. Notice when your thoughts are negative. As they say, awareness is the first step.

2. Decide you want to stop the cycle. Decisions are empowering. When you find yourself going down a negative rabbit hole, decide that you want to stop the cycle.

3. Take a pause. Take a few deep, centering breaths to calm your nervous system and relieve mental and physical tension. This alone can stop the negativity cycle.

4. Write down 3 things you are grateful for. Bring to mind the top three things from the day that you appreciate. Nothing is too small. It can be anything from having a few moments to play with your dog, to having watched a beautiful sunrise. Write them down.

5. Feel the gratitude. When you write down your 3 things, really tune into the feeling of gratitude you have for them. Spend some time with these feelings. You may even notice a smile coming on.

After you get the hang of doing this, you can expand your list to 5, even 10 things you are grateful for. I hope you have found this helpful. I'd love to hear how it works for you.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Thomas Edison knew firsthand the power of the mind, particularly the subconscious. In fact, the world’s most successful people direct their subconscious minds with intention. Want to try it for yourself? Before going to sleep, write down some things that you want to problem solve or accomplish. Include any questions you have related to them. As Edison suggested, ‘make requests’. The idea is that the more specific, the more clearly your mind’s answers will be. While you are asleep, your subconscious will go to work on the requests you made. In fact, research shows that the brain is more active and readily creative during sleep. Try it tonight and see what happens!
