“Not Convertible”: The Day Her Nervous System Said No

A short trauma-informed reflection on embodied consent, subtle boundary work, and the sacred act of self-listening

She didn’t expect much that day—just another check-in on campus, a casual visit to offer a familiar face to a community she often supported. The yoga therapist, known for her warmth and grounded presence, carried years of trauma-informed experience and a lived history of transformation that shaped the way she entered a room, read a moment, and responded to her own body’s cues.

So when a smiling missionary approached—soft-spoken, wide-eyed, and oddly insistent—there was nothing immediately threatening in her manner. But underneath the seemingly innocent interaction, something within the yoga therapist’s body stirred. A subtle tightening in the solar plexus. A wave across the sacral chakra. A prickling at the back of the neck.

This wasn’t attraction.

This wasn’t fear, either—not the fight-or-flight kind. It was information. Her nervous system was whispering what her polite conditioning had been trained to override: This is not safe. This is not yours. This is not welcome.

The missionary wanted to talk about faith, about connection, about the possibilities of spiritual sisterhood. But her eyes lingered a moment too long. Her words began curling not into dialogue but persuasion. And as she leaned in for a hug—eager, uninvited, cloaked in sweetness—the yoga therapist, unshakable in her embodied training, lifted her hand for a high five instead.

A move so small. But a message so clear.

At that moment, she chose to listen not to the story being told—but to the story her own body was living. The high five was more than a gesture. It was a boundary drawn with compassion. A silent signal that said, I see what you're trying to do—and I do not consent to be converted, touched, or claimed.

What the missionary saw as a friendly encounter became, for the yoga therapist, a layered convergence of triggers and wisdom:

The echo of generational trauma resurfacing in a subtle moment of pressure.
The memory of narcissistic charm disguised as spiritual interest.
The emotional residue left by past assaults that taught her to be hyper-attuned to the unspoken.
The internalized expectation to be nice—and the radical unlearning it takes to override that reflex.
A longtime friend—familiar with her body language—appeared just then and pulled her away gently. No words exchanged. Just presence. A silent knowing. A subtle rescue. The yoga therapist exhaled, grateful for the interruption that offered her space to shake off the static and recalibrate her grounding.

Later that night, the missionary sent a text, kind and courteous on the surface. But the yoga therapist felt the ripple of the encounter still echoing in her skin, in her gut, in her breath. She replied briefly, respectfully, and then set a digital boundary that mirrored the energetic one her body had set hours before.

This wasn’t just an uncomfortable conversation. It was a textbook example of how an interaction—even a brief, one-hour one—can light up multiple layers of a survivor’s system:

Somatically, she’d experienced signals from her vagus nerve, musculature, and energy centers.
Psychologically, her development across Erik Erikson’s stages of autonomy and identity reawakened her childhood conditioning around pleasing others and avoiding conflict.
Spiritually, she remained rooted in yogic principles: Ahimsa (non-harm), Satya (truthfulness), and Svadhyaya (self-study).
Yoga Therapy doesn’t just teach movement or stillness. It teaches discernment. The kind that says:
You don’t have to hug anyone you don’t want to.
You don’t have to explain why.
You don’t have to be convertable—emotionally, spiritually, or physically—just to be loved or accepted.

Her nervous system said no.
And that was the most honest, empowered, and sacred response she could offer.

Author's Note:
If you’ve ever felt uncomfortable in a situation that seemed “too small to name,” this story is for you. The path of Yoga—especially Yoga Therapy—isn’t about transcending your body. It’s about trusting it. If you’d like support reconnecting to your own body’s messages, I welcome you to reach out.

Your story is sacred. Your no is sacred. Your healing is your own.

After reconnecting with a high school friend, I found myself flipping through yearbook pages and meeting my younger self again. It was emotional—seeing the girl who carried so much with quiet strength, unaware of how trauma could fog a future.

Yet here I am. A mother. A wellness practitioner. A woman shaped by healing, not by hardship.

Yoga therapy helped me connect the dots—between pain and purpose, faith and movement, tradition and transformation. It wasn’t just a practice; it was a mirror, a bridge, and eventually, a mission.

I’m grateful to the roots shaped at St. John’s Prep in Astoria and Pace University in Pleasantville—your seeds still guide me. This reflection rekindled my sankalpa: to live with clarity, compassion, and intention—and to continue creating spaces where healing and accessibility walk hand in hand.

✨ If you’re curious about yoga therapy, navigating personal healing, or exploring inclusive wellness—let’s connect. I believe our stories deserve spaces that honor both depth and diversity.

🧘🏾‍♀️✨ Yoga Is More Than Poses – It’s Liberation for the Mind, Body & Spirit of my people ✨🧘🏾‍♂️

For generations, the Black community has carried layers of trauma—personal, generational, and systemic. Yoga offers us a space to pause, to breathe, and to reclaim our peace.

Yoga isn’t just about flexibility or aesthetics—it’s a sacred practice of healing, grounding, and resistance. It teaches us how to listen to our bodies, release stress, and reconnect with ourselves in a world that often tries to disconnect us.

🖤 For our community, yoga can:
• Reduce anxiety, depression, and trauma stored in the body
• Create space for joy, rest, and reflection
• Reconnect us with ancient traditions of movement and mindfulness
• Build community rooted in wellness and self-love

Mental health matters—and yoga is one powerful tool in our healing journey.

Whether it’s on the mat, in the park, or in the living room, yoga helps us show up whole. Let’s keep spreading the movement, for our peace, for our power, and for each other. ✊🏾🧘🏾‍♀️💚

Happy International Yoga Day! ✨
What a gift to step into the role of student today—receiving, learning, and expanding my practice in community.

Immense gratitude to India Cultural Center - Tampa for hosting such a beautiful event. The energy was high, the vibes were grounding, and the lunch? Delicious. Vegetarian options galore—and yes, there were tasty vegan choices too!

Feeling nourished, inspired, and deeply aligned.

🖤❤️💛💚 Honoring Juneteenth 🖤❤️💛💚

Today we stand in reverence and solidarity.

We honor our Black relatives and their ancestors—those who endured the chains of slavery, who rose in resistance, who prayed, dreamed, marched, and built a future rooted in liberation.

As Indigenous people, we know what it means to carry the weight of history and the fire of survival. We honor the deep strength that lives in the bones of our Black kin. We remember that true freedom is collective—and we are not free until all our relatives are free.

To our Black elders, changemakers, storytellers, and youth: we see you, we uplift you, we walk beside you.

May this Juneteenth be a time of reflection, celebration, and continued commitment to justice.

Mitakuye Oyasin — We are all related.
