Perfectionist therapists, let’s tell the truth….silence in session can feel unbearable.
So you jump in. Fill it. Rescue the client from the discomfort.
But here’s the thing:
Sometimes, the silence is the therapy.
Sometimes, your need to “keep the session moving” is about your discomfort, not theirs.
Over-functioning isn’t a sign of your skill, it can be considered as a sign your perfectionism is driving.
And when perfectionism is in the driver’s seat, presence takes a back seat.
You’re not here to perform therapy.
You’re here to be in therapy with them.
