Edith was admitted to HCA South Tampa with shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. She was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure, congestive heart failure, and an acute kidney injury. Unfortunately, she had been readmitted several times due to end-stage COPD. She spent multiple days in the intensive care unit, requiring noninvasive ventilation with BiPAP and IV antibiotic therapy. Due to her condition, she experienced significant weakness and was deconditioned. The decision was made to transfer her to Kindred's Long-term Acute Care Hospital, Bay Area Tampa.

Through the help of the respiratory care, rehab, and nursing teams, Edith was able to be weaned off of BiPAP to her baseline of 3L Nasal Cannula. She progressed from requiring 25% assist with all mobility and acts of daily living (ADLs) to being independent with all ADLs and was ambulating 200+ feet with a rolling walker. She is a true Kindred Success Story!

"When I first came, I was expected to die; the hospitals couldn’t do any more for me," shares Edith. "Kindred took me in and speedily worked on me, giving me oxygen and a full bath. That bath was so good, it revived me. With the oxygen and the BiPAP, I was freezing, but it made me comfortable. I felt the love and care they provided me. It gave me a sense to recover, which gave me a will to live and fight back."

Edward was admitted to HCA Florida South Tampa after suffering a hip fracture from a fall that required surgical intervention. Post-operatively he suffered respiratory failure requiring intubation and a stay in the Intensive Care Unit. Upon extubation he continued to have difficulty swallowing, needing a feeding tube, he was confused requiring soft restraints and needing close neuro monitoring and rehabilitation. Edward was admitted to Kindred Hospital Bay Area Tampa on Jun 21st.

Right away, the interdisciplinary teams at Kindred developed a care plan for Edward to meet his goals of regaining his independence. As his neuro status improved, he was able to participate in therapy and advanced his diet, no longer requiring supplemental nutrition through a feeding tube after working with the speech therapist. He worked hard with physical and occupational therapy and was able to progress from requiring 50% assistance with bed mobility and self-care to independently performing all his self-care tasks and ambulating more than 250 feet with a rolling walker.

Edward’s determination helped his care teams support him to meet his goal of discharging to an assisted living facility on July 19th. He is a great Kindred Success Story!

Elaine was admitted to Kindred Hospital Bay Area Tampa on Feb 26th, after a complicated hospital stay due to sepsis and respiratory failure. She required respiratory support with supplemental oxygen through a tracheostomy, nutrition through a feeding tube and was dependent with all activities of daily living (ADLs) and mobility.

During her time at Kindred, she worked hard with the respiratory and rehabilitation teams and started to regain her independence. She was able to wean from oxygen and was decannulated. She regained the ability to eat an oral diet and no longer needed a feeding tube. Elaine progressed with her mobility, making big strides towards regaining her independence. She has a goal to go on 35 cruises this year and we are so happy we could be a part of her journey to get well and start cruising again!
