✨The face behind Sage Wellness, Heather Murphy!✨

From Vanderbilt nursing → catching her first baby at Fort Knox, Kentucky with Mary Carol Akers… this incredible lady has been on quite a journey.

Heather has worked alongside incredible nuns and senior midwives in Texas doing home visits and waterbirths, then served in a bicultural community health center in Chicago with an amazing midwife team led by Evelyn Simmons, and even returned to homebirth work in Chicago after having her own baby with Hillary Kieser.

Later, she moved to Mississippi where she taught baby nurses, worked in a rural hospital, and learned about leadership and grassroots advocacy. Then Jessica Brumley in Florida called, and she started working with USF with high and low risk pregnancies, supporting new OB residents learning normal birth, and contributing to the Florida Perinatal Quality Initiative and the movement for normal physiological birth.

Now she is at St. Pete General, helping expand midwifery care even further.

And in 2025, Heather was honored to be named a Fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

After 22 years in this work, she says it’s been “one of the greatest privileges of my life to stand with women in their most joyful, powerful, and sometimes heartbreaking moments… to hold space, and to empower”.

This next chapter in her career is with health optimization, and it is personal. It’s choosing to take better care of herself after years of pouring into others. Through strength training, whole foods, peptides, wellness care and hormone optimization. Heather is working to support her own longevity so she can keep doing what she loves for years to come and also serve her community with those same options for health!

Midwifery is heart work. And something she loves deeply…but growth throughout her 22+ years in healthcare is exactly what she wants to be doing! Happy International Day of the Midwife!
