Mothers and Fathers Days' may be over, but we did just celebrate our 250th! Technically, the counties and towns in much of eastern NC are actually closer to 400ish years old. We predate the constitution!

Do you have a Mayflower ancestor? Do you have revolutionary war patriots? Where did your ancestors come from? Do you actually have indigenous blood lines?

Dying to find out? Give me a call! Your roots may run deeper than you think.

Went back out to Hobbsville, NC this past Saturday to finish cleaning a wonderful family cemetery. The family decided to plant some lilies on their ancestors' graves.

Cemetery work and documentation really is undervalued. Often, it goes hand in hand with genealogy. Doing cemetery work has given me the unique opportunity to learn so much about the families and cultures of ENC and how connected they are!

This past weekend, we went cemetery hunting. Working on a massive project. Three historic cemeteries in Martin County were officially documented with the state as of today. If you're part of the Edmondson, Andrews, Keel, or Ward families or have family buried at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, the resting place of your ancestors may finally be on file for centuries to come.

I've been thinking about how to do this for a bit now and I think I've got it worked out. Western NC has seen far more than their fair share of loss and destruction because of Hurricane Helene. Many homes have been lost or flooded, and as a result, many invaluable family and genealogical documents have also been lost.

In an attempt to help replace those documents, I'd like to offer my services to the people of Western NC. While I'd like to offer it for free, this service does cost time and money, which I know many people there are lacking right now. So, with that being said, my offer is this:

If a client can provide proof that they live/d in an area affected by the hurricane in NC, provide starting information for their family (names, dates, places for immediate family), and is willing/able to pay $25 total, no strings attached, I will happily find any and all genealogical documents I possibly can and will put them in a book and find a way to get it to them when it's finished. I'll even include a 5 generation family tree.

I will also extend this offer to anyone with family in Western NC, who wants to use this opportunity to help a loved one get their family documents back. Please call or DM with any questions you may have!

Paper can be replaced, people/family can't.

After a more complete review of the historical cemetery survey conducted in the 90s by the Bertie Ruritan Club, there are at least 360 cemeteries in Martin County alone that have not been documented with the state.

The Martin Historical Society and I will be taking on a new project to conduct our own survey and send documentation of these cemeteries to the state.

If you know of any small, family cemeteries in Martin County that may not be documented, please let me know. I will look for it on our list, if it's not there, I will add it.

Today's job went quite well! We leveled two bases, set an obelisk back up, found a headstone that was not known about, set it back up, said hello to one resident when we set his vault lid straight, and then cleaned all the stones and leveled out the dirt. Everything looks a lot better now! Still got a couple things to take care of later this year, but we're in the right direction. Happy Father's Day!
