What To Do When Temptation Hits
It's normal to go through a "detox" phase whenever you radically change your eating habits. Blood sugar lulls and carb cravings are symptoms of carb dependency that have developed over years and decades of eating a high insulin-producing diet.
The following tips may help you ride out the storm successfully:
Satisfy your cravings with liberal servings of Primal foods: If you feel an afternoon lull, take the edge off with a hardboiled egg, some macadamia nuts, a leftover drumstick, or an apple sliced and spread with almond butter.
Change your focus: Usually afternoon lulls correlate with long periods of time sitting still, staring at a computer screen, reading, or doing other mundane tasks. Get up, move around, take a play break, sprint up a flight of stairs, or do a set of pullups to get the blood flowing again.
Take a nap: We're so accustomed to low-octane fueling solutions (sugar, caffeine, ni****ne, etc.) that we forget there are healthy ways to rejuvenate your energy. A twenty-minute nap can help refresh brain chemicals and optimize hormone flow. Likewise, a 30-second plunge into a cold ocean, lake, or swimming pool can refresh and rejuvenate.
Tough it out: One thing you don't want to do is cave into sugar cravings and step right back on the insulin roller coaster. Make sure you always have Primal snacks close at hand and are flexible enough to grab a nap or change your focus any time you need to.
Never lose sight of this important maxim if you are struggling early on: at each Primal meal, insulin production builds more momentum to stay the course in the future. Moderated insulin production facilitates efficient fat metabolism, which helps you not only effortlessly maintain ideal weight, but also naturally sustain high energy levels.
